Trying to remove the head from the tripod, bought as a set already attached. Will not budge. Does it screw off clockwise or counter clockwise? Can't fit it in my suitcase with head attached. I thought maybe I have been tightening it?

Should be like any other tripod head "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey", so CCW when viewed from the top. If you bought a combo tripod/head they may have used LocTite or other adhesive to make the tripod/head combination more secure, so it would take extra effort to break it loose.
