Hi all,

Was just wondering what setting most sports shooters set their tracking sensitivity (Custom Function III - 2)on on their 1D MkIII's?

I've added a poll but feel free to comment too.

FWIW, on the MkII I've found it very schizophrenic when I put the sensitivity on fast. Normal or on the slow side has always worked better for me. Now whether the timing figures are the same with the MkIII or not, I don't know, but I'd guess they're the same.

Track is different from volleyball is different from football is different in low light is different from daytime or ROF, etc, etc, etc.

Two years has taught me to configure based upon the situation.

Middle to slow for most sports. The camera gets too jumpy on fast, and if you want it to change subjects you can simply release and re-press the shutter button to force it to reacquire. I find that more reliable that dragging it from subject to subject anyway.

I'm on both ends of the spectrum, just depends on the sport.

I was just told by Canon to put it to slow....since the tracking sucks right now. It wasn't the only thing they told me to change but was the first thing.

That's good to know , would love to know what else they suggested?

What I was told...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cfn. III-2: change the tracking to Slow

Cfn. III-8: change this to Enable (left/right Assist pts)

Cfn. III-16: select Register and then go down to High Speed and change it from 10 to 8fps.

These changes to your custom functions have been found to have had positive results.

Will give it a test but not sure shooting what...we have wrestling tomorrow but would use strobes and not concerned with FPS, and probably can't get out to shoot it anyways early. Considering I'm shooting 5 state championship games this weekend hate to miss "the" shot having to dial back fps, though 8 should be plenty you just never know. THEN AGAIN, I'll take 8 frames in friggen focus over 4 out of 10 in focus!!

They could just send me the MKIV for a good test run instead but reality beckons.

There's been a lot said on this subject.Different sports will need diferent settings.Normally '0' works fine, but if there's a lot going on then slow it down.I do agree with setting CF3-8 to 1,for rugby,it seems to give a better result. But trial and error will help make the choice;);)

I asked when that would be in the trial system - no answer

Getting this thread back on track

IMO - examining just 1 setting means nothing.

regardless of your tracking sensitivity, you need to make sure you have your other settings in order for the scene.

eg. when I covering Professional Athletes with lots of action I use maximum sensitivity - just the opposite of a lot of users.
