Don't think that all of them are defective. I've had mine since Feb of this year and have had no problems with mine (knock on wood). I say if you want one go ahead and get one!

I just got mine and it seems fine. Have used it quite a bit the last week and have had no troubles whatsoever! The place where I bought mine from delayed me getting it because their Canon Rep told them they were being updated. I waited a couple of weeks and I am sure glad that I did.

See the information here (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=215&modelid=10464) and look on the bottom of the grip fairly near the tripod socket for a small embossed number.

Just some of the old ones were "defective". If you buy a new one from a shop, it'll undoubtably work just fine.

Well mine works great but it appears to have the bad numbers should I take her in? What a drag.

It's a free replacement. All you have to pay is shipping to Canon. They replace it, and pay for the trip back. The build of the new one is miles above the originals. I was quite surprised.
