If anyone takes this question as one bit racist, then please don't respond. I am asking sincere advice. I was shooting a friends son pitching last night, had great light, rebel, 75-300 basic lens, 5.0 at about 1/1000, iso 200. His son is very dark skinned, and his uniforms are yankee knock-offs and and are very white. I had trees for a background, and have had great luck with these shots before. But because of the dark skin, I tried to lighten it up in photoshop to see better facial expressions and caused the pictures to lose clarity and become grainy. With white skinned boys, I have never had this problem, but none of my shots came out nearly as clear as I would like, if I wanted to see any facial expressions at all. With the white kids, I did not have to lighten so much to see facial expressions. Advice? Other than 70-200 2.8!! I will have it hopefully by this fall! I would post pics but I don't know how to do it other than the shrink incredibly method that makes them all look bad! I also need to learn how to post large shots without taking up too much space but maintaining clarity!

can you lighten it enough to make the dark skinned boy look acceptable? If so make a copy of the original i.e. before you lighten the photo. Then lighten the photo till it's acceptable. Then with the copy under the lightened photo use the eraser to erase everything but the subject boy revealing the original photo with the exception of the boy. Not the best tech. but its a very easy one.

Never tried it, but it sounds like a good idea. It's just frustrating because without lighting, everything else in the picture is crisp. Or, at least as crisp as a wannabe could hope for! You said it was easy, we'll just have to see about that! Me and Miss Photoshop, don't get along very well!!:D
