Hi Everyone,

A music artist/producer working on producing his own cd has asked me for usage and pricing on one of my photos for the front cover. He is just starting out but plan on making a 1000 copies for sales on sites like Amazon. He also asked if I could keep in mind (while figuring out pricing) that some of his sales will be only single track downloads from itunes. Anyway I really need your help with figuring out what to charge. I'm not a professional so these pricing issues give me a very difficult time.

How is he limiting downloads to 1000? Or is it 1000 hard copies and unknown downloads? Single track or entire album is irrelevant. They are priced the same.

Using an image on a CD is commercial usage, so price accordingly depending on the specs the artist gave you- up to 1k printed, front cover of cd, how long the artist will be allowed to print copies. I probably would limit and license it as a one time usage to print up to 1000 copies. Then state in the terms that any copies printed after that will need to be licensed again.

Whatever you do, make sure you do your research and know the rates for licensing images for this usage.

Look into fotoquote of some other licensing calculator. It will help a lot.

"Pricing Photography" by Michael Heron ($16.50 on Amazon) has a range of recommendations for exactly this sort of usage, I believe. I don't have my copy of the book handy to just look it up.

It sounds like 1000 hard copies of the CD, plus online usage on websites.

I'm interested in a hard number, if you come upon it!

Wouldn't he be using the cover photo as itunes album art?
