any of canon's EX-series speedlite will work nicely with the 300D. -alex

And a 550EX or 580EX will give you Flash Exposure Control - Something the 300D doesn't have on its own without installing the firmware hack.

I have the 550EX but, if you can afford the new 580EX, that has a facility for compensating for the 1.6 crop factor.

To add the between-the-lines statement that David made above - the 420EX may not be the best choice because the 300D does not provide you with a setting to adjust flash exposure beyond the automatic exposure. If you needed to tweak the exposure, you could not with the 420EX. With the 550EX and 580EX, you can do this on the flash unit.

With 350D, 20D, and other cameras (and even many of the G-series point-n-shoots) you have the capability to make an in-camera setting to tweak flash exposures.

I use the sunpak 555 and it has been very reliable.

I have a Sunpak 555 and it works well (with a Wein Safe-sync) but is full manual only on the 300D. I use it as an optical slave off the Alien Bees now. The 550EX I just picked up seems to be a reasonable substitute for the 555 if I can only get used to having the thing mounted on top of the camera. I would have gone with the 580EX but that would have been too much of a budget stretch.

Only the EX series is compatible with the 300D (and other EOS series digital cameras).
