I understand that a 100mm f2.8 1:1 Macro lens is in wide use for macro shooting ,if one were to add an extender to it would it buy you anything?

macro extension tubes works the same way regardless of the lens attached. So yes, adding the extender to a macro will let you focus that much closer.

Adding a full set of say Kenko ext tubes (68mm) allows you to get to 2:1 magnification with this lens.

Dick: I am just getting into Macro and new to photography as well. My plan is either the Canon 100mm or the Sigma 105mm Macro lens, and I will also be purchasing the Kenko set as well...

I have a Canon Extension tube now but not a dedicated 1:1 lens.I will have to do with the lens I have unless I happen up on a deal on a used one.I wonder how much IQ is lost when stacking tubes.

Very little IQ loss compared to other forms of adding magnification. The only thing that happens is the apparent aperture becomes smaller thus increasing the risk of diffraction softening.
