Hi there I use a monopod( manfrotto 681B) as a light stick. Problem is between use at locations I have to lay it on the floor & away from people. Leaning it against the wall is out. Where can I buy or make a stand that will hold the monopod in a vertical position with my 580 on top
cheers:rolleyes:

You want a light stand. Search your usual photographic places like B&H and find one to suit your budget and needs.

Call Adorama or Bogen and see if they sell just the "three-feet" that go on the bottom of this model:

They screw out from the base piece and then screw back in. It isn't steady enough for a big camera + lens but works a treat as a self-standing light stick.

I don't think that is practical, especially if you're going to leave the flash unit on top. You'd need something with a very large diameter base (or widely spaced legs) because of the leverage the extended monopod would have on whatever base you used.
Don't even think of the monopods with the wimpy little wire legs. That won't work (at least safely for the flash unit). The lightest push from someone would tip it over.
After reading the other two virtually simultaneous posts, I agree 100% with the light stand recommendation.

You're right, Skip. I wouldn't leave it in the open where it could get knocked. And you're limited on modifiers as it won't support an umbrella. But it does make a good light stick if you have an assistant as it can quickly go from overhead boom to secondary light for the background.
It isn't a substitute for a real light stand though if you need modifiers or actual stability. It is a temp solution.

haha I always use self standing monopods for group shots (with me in it)
I usually load it with a 5D2 and 35L and sometimes flash...as long as it's not windy it's stable enough...but not recommended obviously as YMMV
