View Full Version : Test My Gallery

I have a subcription with Fotop.net to store my galleries, and about 2 weeks ago, I noticed the speed has been abysmal. The admin there seems to think it has something to do with the route from my ISP to theirs, in Hong Kong.

If anybody has a second or two, could you check out my gallery and let me know if the images are loading as fast as they should for your connection?
I have a 3Mbit DSL connection, and the images, mostly 100k, should load almost instantly. But for some reason they now take anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute!

Thanks in advance!

I did a few tests and this is what I got.

Browsing Your album even thumbs loaded slow. I timed one of Your photos (http://images4.fotop.net/albums/sharpnsmart/zoo09062004/CRW_2791.jpg) I did it a few times and the results where pretty much the same.

I am on a 2048/512 kb adsl line so I should be able to get that image much faster. To test that it is not my connection that where slow right now I also testet one of my own photos.

D:\temp\test>wget http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/photohtml.php?n=HarrisHawk1.jpg

A significant differnce.

Finnally I can send You a tracert in PM if You like. Maybe You can use this to get the admin to investigate further since its clearly not Your path to the server thats the bottleneck.

Just tried from work, where we have dual dedicated T3 lines coming in. Definitely slow. No scientific timing methods used, but I browsed to one of your galleries and clicked on a thumbnail to load a photo (in the "Cricket" gallery). I ended up closing my browser after 40 seconds (the picture never did show).

Could be interesting to hear what kind of response times users in Hong Kong get?

Drisley,

I tried to spend some time in a couple of your galleries but the loading was just way too slow.

What I did look at was excellent. Your work at ISO3200 is just amazing

Near instant on broadband.

I just tried it and it didn't seem all that slow to me. Enlargment took less than ten seconds. I think my connection is about 80kbs

Thanks guys. Very helpful.
I will pass this on to Fotop admin, and I hope they fix it soon.
Oh, and thanks mucho ssim. The camera takes the credit :)

Thanks again guys.
I forwarded your comments to admin at Fotop.net, and they promptly moved my galleries to another server. This seems to have corrected the issues. I have loved Fotop for the past year, and I really didn't want to move somewhere else. Nobody else has the price/service/features that are offered there.
If you want to try my link again (in my sig) and report back, that would be cool.
:)

Thanks tommy.
It should probably still be faster, but 43K/s isn't too bad at all.
Btw, what are you using to test? It looks pretty nifty.

Definitely much faster now. I'm at home on my DSL connection and the same photo I gave up on yesterday loaded in about 3 seconds today.

Its a small free utility called wget (http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/wget.html) that can retrieve any url/file and store it locally. For example I use it in a batchfile that runs every day to get latest virus definitions for my antivirus software.

It has loads of options You can read all about it on the website link above.

Thanks MTalley.
Btw, again, I can't say enough about Fotop support. They emailed me back within hours of any email, and in the end moved me to a new server to fix the problem. Not bad for 3GB hosting and unlimited bandwidth for $12 a year ;)

I have always said for the majority of the cheap/free sites that Yo get what You pay for (which usually is nothing) but in this case it really seems that they provide good service for a low price.

Yes, they are very good. Last year they had a hard drive crash, and lost all their data. They were very responsive in their forums, and now they have a redundant array setup to prevent the same problem. Also, they added 6 months free to our 12 month paid service.
They aren't perfect, but they are trying to please.

fotop.net's 3Gb storage capacity for $12.8 doesn't allow move clips upload. I personally think the 500mb for $16.8 with unlimited file resolution and movie clips upload best suit my needs.

BTW, fotop.net is quite popular among the locals here.

Drisley
all sorted by the look of it
full images are opening nearly instantly with broadband.
You know what I think of your pictures in previous comments to you.
Well done , they are just excellent.

Redbird, personally, I would never use movie clips, so that is why the $12 plan is so great. But it's also nice to have that option.
Huckaback, thanks for the compliments!
Hellashot, thanks for testing.
All looks good now!
