Re Zoom Browser

I had to replace my G3 after all these years. What could I choose but a G11? I realize that the software from the G3 is ancient, but I much prefer it in a couple of aspects to what I found when I downloaded the new Zoom Browser Version 6.4 that came with my new camera.

With my old software, the photo names were 999_9999.jpg. The new are IMG_9999. This scheme really doesn’t give you many photographs before creating duplicate names/numbers. Is there some easy way I can change the naming scheme back to the 7 numbers? This is really ugly, and trying to mass rename would require that I keep very careful records for the next 999 sequence.

My old software gave me the option of creating new folder names when I downloaded photos. The new just creates dates. I Never use dates as the names for my folders (at least I didn’t). I use place names, and often I am at the same place for more than one day. I guess I can rename folders and transfer stuff from multiple dates into the renamed folders, but that seems like a step backwards. Any easy solutions?

There are some nice things in the new software, but they are not important to me in comparison to the naming scheme. I still have the old CD for the G3 software. Anyone know if I can reload it and use it instead?

Why does it matter if you have duplicate image numbers if they are all in different folders?

At the moment I have two newer cameras that are at similar #s so I have the same file number being used often, not to mention archived photos from older cameras that have already been there, but they're all in different folders so there is no confusion.

I rename folders like you, as that's the only way I can find my photos (I forget dates) but that only takes as long as it does for me to type the new name. If I have multiple days worth of shooting from the same place or trip, I don't transfer individual files but simply drag and drop the additional folder into the renamed one. Takes about 5 seconds. Then when I open the renamed folder I can find photos quicker as they're already separated by each day of the trip or event. Just thought I'd share as it works well for me, but I'm sure it's not for everyone.

Why?

1. Sometimes photos become separated from their original folders, intentionally or otherwise. I often browse through folders and transfer a photo or two (or a copy of them with a naming scheme that simply adds the letter “c” to the existing file name) to a new folder. The numbers are then no longer separated by their original folders. Also, now I can search on a file name and have a single file come up in the result instead of bunches. This is not the end of the world, I realize, but who needs additional hassles/work-arounds in his life?

2. The photo names do not match the names in the camera (which are in the 999_9999 format when one displays).

3. I am compulsively organized and prefer not to have duplicate numbers to confuse things.

As far as dates for folder, I can live with this (not without complaining) by reorganizing after the download. But it used to be I could choose either date or my own folder name when downloading pictures. New software should offer more features, not less.

At least I love my new camera.
