Dislike Canon paper plus glossy II - too saturated

I have been happily using the canon photo paper plus glossy for years. I have set up photoshop to color manage and use the related ICC profiles, and the prints have been perfect, colours were very close to what I see on my monitor.

And Canon goes and changes the paper!!! I am hating this new plus glossy II paper, the colors are way too saturated. The prints come out too yellow and magenta. I am so annoyed. Yes I am using the glossy II printer profile. I think canon meant it to be this way, since they advertise it as being 'vivid'.

Anyone else having the same problem? Ugh this is so annoying. Why change something for the worse? I can see the benefit of having vivid colours for landscapes, but it looks awful on people's skin.

Could you tell me please, where did you download the glossy II printer profile?

I've printed on that paper and didn't experience any problems that I was unhappy with the paper. I don't use alot of Canon paper, I prefer the Ilford Galerie series. Are you still using the old profile on the new paper?

The old canon paper and profile's were the best, I now use Galerie paper with Ilfords profiles for my canon (i9950) printer, you wont be disappointed.:cool:

Rayk I think the profile came with my printer (IP4500), I dont remember downloading it, it was just there, so it must have come with the printer's driver.

Rene, I believe I am using the correct ICC profile, its the one called with GL on the end. I got the info here:

I hope I am using the right ICC profile. I think its right. Canon's paper (http://homepage.mac.com/renard/ls/Canon_ICC_Profile_Guide.pdf) on ICC profiles was written before the glossy II came out.

Well, it looks like the right profile then. Don't know the new Canon papers, as I never used them.

If anyone is interested - after wasting heaps of ink and paper, I figured out a workaround. You can use the 'photo paper pro' profile (PR1 or PR2) on the glossy II paper and it comes out much better. No more oversaturated skin tones. It produces very similar prints to the old version of plus glossy, they are a closer match to what I see on my monitor.

Oh and I did try using the old plus glossy profile on the glossy II paper, but it didnt look right. For some reason the Pro profile works best.

Karl I tried scanning it but it doesnt show the difference properly,the scanner doesnt do a good job of picking up the colours. I even tried taking a photo of the photos but that didnt show up well either.

Epson R2880 with Epson, Hahnemühle or InnovaArt.

I am really liking the Gold Fibre for colour and B&W it is just a small touch warm compared to Moab Colorado but the surface seems a bit tougher as well (even though I have heard the comment that it scratches easily). Once I find a paper I like I will stick to it as there is one less variable for me to worry about. In the darkroom I used one warm and one neutral (cool) paper. I am not sure if I will need a warm paper for digital printing.



As for scanning two prints to show the difference I am not surprised that didn't work, to me there is nothing like a print.

I have a hard time even thinking of something as a photograph until printed and that includes slides. I do like to sit and stare at prints though.


I to was not very happy about Canon's switch of papers for my dye printer. The old paper served it's purpose.

Quad I can completely relate to sticking to a good thing, I had a great workflow, I am so annoyed that the paper change has ruined it.

Oh and when I looked at my photos again today, the prints from the Pro profile on the glossy II paper now look crappy. A bit green and dull. I guess I should have waited 24 hours before I made any assumptions.

I keep comparing them to the perfect prints with the old glossy paper, nothing comes close, the colours are spot on.
