Best shot I've seen from you yet. Did you do any post processing in PS? Looks to me like it could use some USM. If that's an uncropped shot you could do 250, 1, 0 for the full size shot or 500, 0,2, 0 for the resized

Thanks,
Well bit of a story there, had the use of a Canon EF28-105, plastic one not the good metal mount one. got so excited i somehow got a smuge on the back of lens, all the shot came out a bit soft focus. so it is croped and there is already 2 lots of usm on the image.
i use 200, 0.3, 0 as a guide and then 100, 0.3. 0 when i have resized for web 700 pixels wide.
got so fed up as had to give the lens back, next track day i took my Sigma 70-300 apo for my EOS 3000 film camera (EBAY this week), which will not work auto without a err99 on my 350D. So i have to insulate the contacts on the lens and shoot manual or AV and focus manual lens works wide open only. (Had to do this 25 years ago on my parctika). got a few sharpish good shots (see below) keeping speed up 250 and abouve and zoom down below 200. the DOF at this aperture is too small really but it was worth a go.
Have won an canon EF 100-300 USM F4.5-5.6 on ebay so see how i get on this friday.
one of my keepers with the 70-300 sigma on manual focus etc wide open
Large JPEG.
1/250/s
f:4.5
around 135mm or 200 with crop
iso 100
1/3 stop UNDER exposed (gave me a good histogram)
first a 100% crop straight from camera perameter 2 i.e no extra sharpening , contrast or saturation.

I'm seeing repeatedly that something has seriously got to be wrong with my camera or lens. I bought the 50mm 1.8 instead of getting the kit lens, because I was told the kit lens was horrible. Sad enough, the first picture you posted was clearer than any pic I've taken yet with my 50mm... I wish I had money to get a midrange lens. :-(

Scraggles, the kit lens is "horrible" compared to "L" series lenses, but if you shoot to it's limitations, like all lenses you get good pictures. the EF 50 mm F1.8 is a fantastic lens for the price very sharp at 2.8 and above, i hope to get one soon, they go for silly money on ebay I can get a new one for around £65 inc postage, so it's on my christmas list.
take some sample pics on a tripod at various apertures but in good light and post them here. i read reviews on the 350d and knew what to expect. a lot of folk have bought one and complaned about the results. The D70s has a better kit lens but didn't feel right in my smallish hands.
please post a sample of your pics with shooting details please. do a focus test on a your box and a ruler at 45 degrees to rule out front or back focus.
the 350D does produce "soft" pictures, is the camera at default settings?, you do need to post process them quite a bit in photoshop or similar app.
please do not worry this forum and others i am sure will help you sort out the problem, camera lens or otherwise. if it's makes you feel better here is a sample of my pictures taken with the 350d first day out. straight from the camera. i felt like putting it on ebay as when i cropped and sharpened they still looked rubbish. just took a bit of panning practice and getting the aperture to F8

The 50 1.8 isn't a USM lens so it's pretty slow on the focusing to begin with. I tried it for hockey once and it sucked and I ended up going to my 17-85 which is a slow lens, but it at least had USM. Something like my 70-200L IS just pust the other lenses I have to shame.
Rob your shots are very good considering the lens you're using. Next weekend when I shoot another rally or moto race I will try a non IS lens and see what I can come up with as well :)

Thanks Exit, I am sure they will look fantastic. i tried my S/H ebay canon EF100-300mm F4.5-5.6 today and even at 5.6 the result look very good. Unfortunatly it Error99's a lot, will have to clean the contacts i think and try tommorow or monday. will post a random shot from today. got 20 of the 300 or so i shot sorted and named. My keeper ratio is getting better so more pp fun with less to do if you see what i mean.
this is a young lad (no6) still to young to race till next year with his dad Terry (169) behind him.

Wonderful shots in this thread :D
Truly makes my heart beat faster (even the Guzzi, though everyone knows that the engines for that were initially invented for stationery cement mixing machines  )
Best regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy, cement mixers LOL. and Mr honda makes sewing machines, at least my honda 50 sounded like one.
I am amazed at the results i am getting with the 350D, it really is a capable camera and well suited to my small chubby hands, messed around with manual settings today as the sun was in and out. was getting a bit lazy with the AV setting. really makes you think about lighting. I have put a hand held meter on my Christmas list if any relatives use this forum (hint hint)
will post more soon, if i can keep awake.
more track fun tomorrow and Monday, will i ever get any proper work done?

Very nice captures! The Guzzi is beautiful. I bought a Laverda 750 SF, new in 1974 and paid $1800 U.S. for it back then. I kept it for 15 wonderful years. I wish I still had it.:(
