In 1964, Alaska suffered one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history. The damage was unbelievable. In the little village of Portage, located on Turnagain Arm (bay), they thought they narrowly escaped major damage. However, the ground they were on sank about eight feet. No immediate problem, but when the winter tides returned, the entire village was under water. It has never been re-built, but a few structures remain to be seen today, sticking out of the mud.

Beautiful, Stan. Did you get into interior Alaska on that trip? I lived for 10 years near Fairbanks, and worked at the University of Alaska.

Nice warm glow to the image which somewhat belies the history of the area.
Good capture

Yes, we visited Fairbanks and points north, such as Coldfoot (above the Arctic Circle). Toured the univerity's gardens and musk ox farm while in Fairbanks.
