View Full Version : C1 Pro RIP?

I just read this at another forum, and it doesn't look good for C1 Pro (Capture One).
"Did you know that Michael Tapes (the US rep for Phase One and the guy who made Capture 1 bearable) has dropped them in favor of RSE? Take a look at http://pictureflow.com/ (http://pictureflow.com/) and see the second article on the page. Go to the forums and note that the Capture One forums are locked. I don't see Capture One having a big future. Their business practices leave a lot to be desired."

That's interesting news, Drisley. I've used C1 but know little about Rawshooter. Is Rawshooter a good program? I see both companies are out of Denmark... that's a remarkable coincidence. I wonder if they are linked in some way...

Ladyhawk, I now use CS2 for Raw conversions, but it's still not good news. The more competition the better.
If you look at the two programs, RSE and C1 Pro, they look very similar. From what I've heard, some of the people who designed C1 Pro left, and they started their own project, RSE. So yes, they are linked. And now with Michael Tapes moving over too, they have even more coincidence.
I have a feeling that the low level guys were fed up with the high level and marketing guys at PhaseOne.

I thought I read (when RSE first came out) that it was developed by the guy who developed the RAW conversion for Phase One. It's not unusual for smart people to go their own way. It's also extremely common (at least it is here) for them to take business friends with them. Perhaps that's all that's happened here.

I believe one (or more) of the people from C1 left as Drisley mentions and started RSE.
I will try to see if I can get more information about this. I have a colleague at work who's cousin is one of the programmars behind RSE.
Drisley, how do You like the new converter in CS2 over the old? I really like the improvements and with this new version together with my new monitor I am actually finding that some photos that I had thought would require too much work to get a decent photo from actually looks much better now :D

I thought there must be some connection between the two. Thanks for the info... I just downloaded RSE to take a look at it. I just wish there was a definitive answer as to which converter did the best job... like with cameras, we all know the 20D is the right choice!

The thing I am unsure about, is why Phaseone locked the Capture One forums on their site?
I know Michael Tapes used to be the guy who got alot of the flack in those forums, and also did all of the correspondence with users.
Tommy, I really like the CS2 raw converter. It does everything Capture One did, and then some.
I like how you can make your own custom profiles (http://www.photoshopforphotographers.com/pscs2/download/movie-10.pdf)for your camera too.
I wish somebody out there with a keen eye would make some modded profiles using this technique that would give similar results to the Etcetera profiles available for Capture One (I hear they are very good). However, the default profiles are good too.

Michael Tapes was a consultant to Phase One, and he operates a site called Raw Workflow, through which I bought Capture One. The Phase One forums on this site have been locked as he is no longer affiliated with Phase One. Phase One have their own forums, which are not locked. I don't think it's quite as sinister as it sounds.
Edit: removed some stuff which is not needed

Simon, will Capture One Pro work with Canon 350D soon? I was shown a beta that was just out (in Swedish, which was fun, since the swedish translation was a bit.... uhm... ok, not so good). The demo-guy used a Canon 20D and that was pretty impressive when he was pounding in Raw-pictures directly through the computer (that was hooked up to the camera). It was amazing really!
I will most likely review Capture One Pro once the new beta is in "sharp" version for Swedish MacWorld Magazine, so if you know any dates or can email me or something when it's done, it'd be appreciated.

Is Rawshooter a good program? NO! It's a GREAT program!
:D:D I'll buy the $s version when it comes out.

Petra, I'm not sure if I've somehow given the impression that I have a relationship with Phase One, but just to be clear, I am just one of their customers.
As I understand it, Capture One 3.7 supports the 350D in both LE and Pro versions. However, I
don't think they have sorted out tethered support for the 350D yet. I'd ask that question on their (not locked) forums.

Oh, sorry Simon. Got confused there. The demo guy said they were working on it on their beta, but I'm not sure it was going to be ready when they released the fully working upgrade. I know they support the Raw import, I was more curious of the "shooting into the computer" feature. That really kicked ass and was fun that they now support Canon cameras and not only Hasselblad (Nikon, where are you??)

It's the Tethered support I'm waiting for, for the 350D... :) (sorry if I was unclear on that one).

What do you like about it, PhotosGuy? I downloaded it, thinking I was getting a 30-day trial... guess this is a beta version?:)

Karen, it is a beta version, but I haven't found any problems using it, & I just like it overall. It seems pretty well thought out*, runs fast, & if the average person learns how to use it, they can get by with PSE instead of PS.
* I do have an issue with the way they copy settings to other pics, but they say it will be changed in the paid version.

Thanks, PhotosGuy. I've tried it on one pic so far, and noticed it was fast also. It will be a great program for a lot of people if it works with PSE...

It will be a great program for a lot of people if it works with PSE... Not what I meant. Do the conversion first. Open the tiff in PSE after. With the exception of problem images, you should only need to crop, sharpen, & resize for the web in PSE.

Thanks, Frank... I misunderstood you. But this would apply to any raw conversion program, right?

PSCS has one built in & there may be others that work as a plug-in. I think PS Elements does, too.
I don't mind that RSE is a separate program 'cause I can upgrade it without also upgrading PS7.
