I've been using the SanDisk Extreme III without a problem. Although the Ultra II would probaly work just fine for less $$$

I've been using a Ritek RiData 16GB card with no problems. Bought it for about $30 from Newegg and it's a class 6.

You'll get around 750 jpg pictures set to large/fine with a 2GB card. Be sure to get at least a Class 4 rated SDHC card for faster writing between shots. Most common name brands such as SanDisk, PNY, and Kingston are fine.

I'm using the Sandisk Ultra II 16Gb that I paid about $59Cdn for. At the prices that memory cards are selling at I just got the largest capacity I could find at the time. This gives me all the room I need to shoot video and stills at the highest quality that the camera can produce. The larger capacity also helps if you shoot RAW which tends to use up lots of space.
As avigar stated above, stick with a minimum Class 4 card. Anything lower and I believe it can cause you to run into issues with video quality at higher frame rates, slower read/write speeds, etc.
I've also got several 4Gb and 2Gb Ultra IIs that I keep as back up for my G11 as well as in my other Elphs. My wife uses the 2Gb cards since her SD700IS isn't SDHC compatible.

that's why I was wondering about mbs - that is the write speed, correct? For video as well as writing in raw I believe? I'm getting my G11 today, and I can't wait! Thanks everyone - it looks like I have several options - maybe one for video and a back-up for a jpeg sort of day ;)

Hey Scott, yes Mb/s is the read/write speed. The faster it is, the less you have to worry about your buffer filling when shooting continuous, or jerky video when shooting at the highest frame rates and resolution, and the faster your files can download to your pc after.

Is there an echo in here? LOL. Looks like some of what I said above was cut and pasted straight into this response!

I got a deal on one 4gb 30mbs sandisk at BB - mismarked, so they honored it, but only one. I'll likely pick up a 16gb on line as I see some better prices there - but the 4gb got me started. Loving the new G11! Thanks for all of the responses to my questions!

I was thinking about this card for my G9 as I was hoping that it would let me take photos faster with les of a lag time between shots.

After reading the above posts I'm assuming that it will do what I want.
Costs £18.99 (about $32)

Hi Fergie, yep that's an Extreme card which IIRC is Sandisk's best performance card. It's made to endure extremes in temperature so if you're planning any shoots at the North or South Poles you're good to go!
It's a Class 10 card which is more than adequate.

Hey Fergie - that's exactly the one I got. Works fine for now - I haven't tried more than a few seconds of movie, but have taken a few hundred jpeg shots on it already.

You guys should be all set with those Extreme cards.

Seems to be working great! My old camera had a 256mb sd with a locking mechanism that would lock as you put it back in the camera, so it was taped on the side. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't an Extreme card with 30 mb/s overkill for a G-series? Write speed is more critical for fast shooing dslr's which shoot at 6fps or faster. G's are not fast shooting.

You beat me to it tmwag, I was about to querey that but as have a G9 I was going to ask on another thread. But I will ask it here.
What is the top card for a G camera ?
The Ultra cards are probably overkill as they will be much faster than the write speeds of the cameras.
Cheers.

I'm using the Extreme III with a write speed of 20MB/s and I think that's overkill. How fast does a G9 or G11 shoot? 1.5fps

Yep it probably is but if it was purchased at a good price I'd say why not. At least if it's a decent sized capacity, you've somewhat future-proofed yourself for your next camera. A lot of the consumer level dSLRs use SDHC instead of CF now too.

Suddenly an ultra card seems pointless.

I'm not all caught up in card speeds and such...they all record images:)

Agreed, once your card is Class4 or higher you're good with a G series or most P&S cameras. I had just commented on the Extreme cards because I was saying if you're getting it at about the same price as an Ultra II you might as well get it to "future-proof" yourself for future camera purchases, eg future cameras with HD video capability, dSLRs using SDHC, etc. If you're not getting a deal on the Extreme then get an Ultra II or comparable speed card. I personally stick to Sandisk and Lexar.

So the mb/s is the speed at which a card writes. What does the class of the card suggest? I'm learning something here:cool:

Here's a wikipedia link with some good info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
If you scroll down to the sections on Speed and Speed Class Ratings you'll get a better understanding.

Also something to take into consideration. My Class 6 offbrand card is much slower than the Class 4 Sandisks (Ultra II) that I have.

Yeah that's one of the reasons I stick with Sandisk and Lexar. IMO they're the two most reputable media card manufacturers. I know there are other good ones out there but I'm happy with these. I've never had one fail.
