A complicated topic.

My local photo place does prints in 6x4 format (300dpi). So, if I want a nice 6"x4" print I have to present it to them in 1800x1200 pixel size (or any larger formula - multiply 3x6 I think - variation of) Easy enuff, but the problem is that my canon S40 and others too take picture only in the following resolutions:

2272x1704 best (7.573"x5.68")
1600x1200 (5.333"x4")
1024x768 (3.413"x2.56")
640x480 (2.133"x1.6")

So, you see the problem is that there is no 1800x1200 choice available (or large multiple) to make my desirable 6x4 print. As is I have to either crop and lose some image details or shrink the picture and have big white boarders.

My question is....can I somehow (thru firmware or black magic) force my camera to take pictures compatible with printing a 6"x4" print?? or am forever stuck with these resoltons?

There is no way to change the resolution of images taken on your camera to suit printing. The only alternative you have is to crop your images to the right size or if you're not a purist you can always adjust the image proportions to make them suit but you run the risk of having stretched tall or sqaushed flat objects and ruining your image.

Some images actually look quite decent with a black border but then you can definitely tell they came from a digital camera.

Most photo shops will judiciously crop the negative in order to get the correct sized photo.
Just crop your photo to the proper size and with the proper framing/composition. This can be bad if you've set up your composition to use the full frame.
But if you're sticking with that format you can always mask off the LCD to adjust for the end result.
It's not much help I know, sorry.

It seems that all cameras use a 4:3 format. I have seen adverts for some photo-shops (in the UK ?) that are now using the NEW 6 x 4.5 digital format.

Hope it helps a little
