I want the best way to get portrait fill light/flash under the following circumstances:

Outdoors/no ceilings
one flash, on camera (EX 420 or 430 II)
portrait orientation with flash head facing upright, with the skinny part facing the subject.

Which bouncer/diffuser/box/lampshade/pringles can works the best for this situation?

I have been using a piece of foam strapped around my flash, but it only gives catch light to the subject, it doesn't divert it all, so flash power must be max, or the shot is under exposed.

Here is my current rig:

Let me know!

I would imagine you'll get a number of different suggestions.

Personally I have been using the Lumiquest Pocket Bounce for the past 12 months.

I have also just been reading "On Camera Flash" by van Niekerk. There is a whole chapter dedicated to Flash techniques outdoors. One of the options he talks about bouncing the flash off buildings and windows when outside. Something I have yet to try.

I like the Joe Demb Flash Diffuser (DFD) Pro:

www.dembflashproducts.com (http://www.dembflashproducts.com)

The tilting reflector provides versatility and the diffuser softens the flash. It provides beautiful lighting when used on camera in the configuration that you asked about.

Joe recommends that the tilting reflector be placed in the vertical position or forward position for outdoor shots and the difffuser be placed in the vertical position.

Send an email to Joe regarding your question. He always gives a personal reply. Aside from his great products, this personal customer service is another facet of Joe's operations that I really like. I have just emailed joe regarding the same situation in shooting the night markets in China. I will share his reply when I receive it.

I have two Joe Demb diffuser/reflectors. I use the DFD on my 550EX and 420EX flashes and his Flip-It Junior on my tiny Canon 270EX.
