here is a 17-85IS gallery that i uploaded full size Jpeg images to...............all are handheld shots, and none are meant for photographic criticism, just shots to show the lens capabilities................

Thanks for the post. I am seriously considering theis lens to complete a two lens travel kit for my bike. There was nothing in your gallery to dissuade me. Were the photos heavily photoshopped or pretty much straight out of the camera?
I particularly liked http://www.pbase.com/summerwind4/image/44701048

Yeah. I recently purchased one of these lenses and I would have to say that overall I am very pleased with the results that I get. I realize it is not everyones cup of tea but it is a good 'walk-around' lense and a very capable lense for a lot of other stuff as well. I think that most people that don't own L glass would appreciate the capabilities of this lense.

Thanks, Dew,
Now I remember the post, very clear crop.
I have come to think that most lenses can produce good photos if you work within their limitations. I believe that the IS will allow me to tighten down the f/stop to avoid the softness of wide open. It looks like it will be a perfect companion dot my 70-300 DO.
Oh, yeah. I like your dog

I did post a couple of quick pix that I took when it arrived at http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=77165
I have not yet had time to get out with it for a real work out. I'm looking forward to taking it to th MotoGP at Laguna Seca in July.
It will never be quite as sharp as the L series but they will never be so compact. Love it so far.

thx a lot Skip..............love your pup, and it's the main reason i want one........my chihuahua is only 4lbs., about 12 inches in length, and the 17-85 is not even close to being long enough to catch her when were in the back yard..LOL
i need to get after my local guy to get a couple in....i like it!!

I eventually want 2 kits. One for bike travel with the DO and the 17-85 IS and another kit with big L glass. 100-400 L for the long end and an EF-S 10-22 for real wide

Hey skip - I have to admit - the dog ain't mine! A friend of mine recently lost his 2 dogs (through old age, not carelesness!) and now has 2 young replacements (you can see the other in this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=76294)). The light one is the nephew of his old dog Caleb.
I was really thinking about getting a 70-300 DO. I'm sure it'll make a great travel companion for the 17-85 - so much range in so little space! In the end though (and after much consideration!) I've just ordered a 70-200 IS & 1.4x MkII instead - should arrive early next week & the wait's killing me!
I decided against the DO mainly because of the flair issues as I felt this would hurt when shooting at air shows when you can't choose your position relative to the sun (although a friend of my father has one and loves it!).
You'll have to let us know how Laguna Seca goes!
p.s. - i like your dachshund! :)

Good choice Dew. It is not possible to go wrong with any of the 70-200 L lenses and the IS is certainly the top dog. Combined with the TC you should have a killer combo.
