I was at a graduation this weekend to try out my new combination. We were sitting quite far back from the grads as shown in the first photo. The white circle indicates were my neighbors daughter was standing (valedictorian). Throwing on the 70-200 + 1.4 extender on the 20D produced a decent photo without being obnoxious in getting close to the grads. (It was humerous to see all the little point-and-shoots next to me trying to get a decent shot.):)

I couldn't be happier with this combination.

I'm 99% sold on this combo myself ... your sample helped me put the items in the shopping cart :)

By the way, did you use any USM for this sample? I tried a bit (hope you don't mind) and think that you could go with a bit more sharpening.

Hello Bob, can you please tell us/me in a few words what you did to improve this picture to make it look so much better?
How much USM or other adjustments did you do?
Thanks in advance from a newbee in PS.

Very nice! I was thinking about getting the 1.4x

From the guys that use extenders... Concerning the 2.0x ext. Is the extra distance you get worth the extra sharpness you loose? Or is the loss noticable? I have been thinking about getting the extenders, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I love the razor sharpness of my 70-200L

Bob, I'm curious how you sharpened the image too. What's USM?

The 1.4x works pretty well on the 100-400 too :-)

Bob, I'm curious how you sharpened the image too. What's USM?

I used unsharp mask in PSE at amount=150%, pixels=0.3 and amount=0. If I was sharpening with the original image I would try 300%, 0.3, 0 to start.

Images produced by a DSLR are typically soft due to the anti-aliasing filter in front of the sensor and the way the camera interpolates color data. To correct for this you need to do some sharpening as part of your workflow. If you don't, images from a point & shoot may look sharper than from your expensive DSLR with an expensive lens, and you could be a bit disappointed with the results.

It's fun to be able to fade into the background and still snap off a few good photos.
I have the 1.4 as well and it's providing great service!

I was very pleased with the 1.4 on my 70-200 2.8 with still photo's, however it had issues with sevro focusing.......or at least getting the sharp images I am used to from that lense in servo mode. If I had to guess I would say 25% more were not sharp.Other than that it was razor sharp

Likewise!

I have been wondering whether the 1.4 was a good idea - thanks for the example

Hi all. Thanks for the great comments. This really is a fun combo, and for those contemplating getting the 1.4x, think no longer. You'll enjoy it.

Hi Bob, (oops, down goes another shot;) ) I did apply a little USM to the original photo, but backed it off a little. I made some prints of these for my friend, and the prints showed a little too much "squareness" or "blockiness" making the print look a little unnatural. Probably could go more for web viewing though. Thanks for showing the difference.
