This is my first try on portrait. Canon 350D, single light, no flash, 50mm @ F5.6.
Cropped -> Little smoothing -> B/W -> Colorize
All comments are welcome, no need to be gentle :)

I think I would lower your main to get catchlights in her eyes.

Great start,
just keep experimenting with the position of the light....

I like the layout, but think the shadows on the left side (left of her nose and above her eye) are a bit too dark. Maybe a little fill flash to even that out? Otherwise, very good. I like the pose and the crop. The color is nice, too.

Thanks for the comments. Playing with the lights is completely new thing to me, gotta experiment a little :)

I think I would lower your main to get catchlights in her eyes. And try a white bounce card to her left to fill the shadows a bit. Take a look at this for some bounce lighting ideas. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66140

nice shot :)
Anyway, the crop is a little too tall for a portrait :)

Anyway, the crop is a little too tall for a portrait I did catch the ;-) but still want to say that just 'cause they make paper in certain sizes doesn't mean that we should be limited by them. Matte it! ;-)

I like the crop and the lighting... but oddly enough, the charm around neck getting hidden in the hair shadows bother me. LOL. I'd wanna position it so it's seen better. Dumb yea.

I agree with the comments about needing to lighten the shdows: also, I would like the sitter's face to be centred as to me the composition looks unbalanced.
