The color doesn't do it for me, but the b & w really works for me!

Its your first post so welcome to the forum, theres a lot of info to be found on here and indeed always some great pictures to view.
Now I agree with Leorooster, the colour shot is not the best of the 2. but you need more info to find out why I guess.
firstly you took the picture so there must be some interest there for you.
now study it and decide in your mind what are its strengths and weaknesses.
Had you intended the battery to be main subject, if so ensure its sharply focused and not sharp on the words.
the range of colours in the picture seem ok
I like all the angles as you look through the image & so composition is not to bad.
major problem for me is the lack of any detail in the whites of the paper, this can sometimes spoil a photo.
these are my views, we are all different so the next person may like or dislike other elements in your images. so then its up to you to decide.
the black and white shot is so much better, first theres no question as to main subject, we the viewer looks straight at the shoes, as they are sharp and contrasty with lots of detail, well done.
my preference would be to burn in (darken )the top thus keeping the interest within the frame, a normal thing with black & white printing (say burn in a sky in a landscape shot)
just cover the top to see.
some good shapes/angles and detail in the shot to provide interest to the viewer.
as photographers we sometimes need to direct the viewers eyes to look at what we think is the main subject within the frame, if by sellective focus or darkening down one area to strengthen another so be it.
Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum. I like the first one alot, never thought I would like a photo of old trainers, but there you go :-) The colour one is interesting for a moment while you give it a second glance to see what your looking at, but unfortunately there is nothing there, there is no story.

It's not the camera that counts in creativity but the person behind it!
Welcome to the forum and I hope we see more of your work.
The B&W is nice, I like it alot.
Cheers

I'd rather see the shoes farther to the left so the tops aren't tangent to the top of the cement. Good try, though.
I assume that the battery isn't the subject as it's upside down & OOF, but what does it have to do with the Helsing Gym which seems to be the real subject? I don't know what this pic is supposed to say. ;-)

The black and white shot is nice, however I feel it could use a little less contrast than it currently has.
