Just ordered 70-200mm f/4, question about mack warranty

This weekend I finally was able to order my first L lens :) I really wanted to go with the f/2.8, but the huge price difference kept me away, and I've seen such great results from the f/4, I knew I'd be happy with it anyway on my 20D. I may get a TC later on as well.

I ordered from B&H, and they have a $25 mail in rebate, and a 7-year Mack warranty for $25... I figured it'd pretty much end up being a free warranty after the rebate, so why not? So I ordered that as well.

Afterwards I began thinking... Is that $25 a 1-time charge, or is it $25 a year for the 7 years? Also, since I ordered it at the same time as my lens, do I have to do anything to put it into effect, such as fill out a form or anything? I've never gotten an extended warranty before, and really only did it this time because I thought it'd be worth it for security of my L lens and it was pretty cheap.

Mack warranties are one time charges. You will need to registar your lens with them to make it work. You can visit Mack online for more details.

I just received my first 28-200mm L from B&H on Saturday. I had a chance to shoot a few in the back yard today and it's GREAT! Sharp, fast, quiet and bright.

I didn't get the warranty though. Maybe I should have but I wasn't offered the option when I called the order in. Oh well....

It's a one time charge, and the warranty must be registered within 30 days to be valid. I used to send in the cards, but now I just register them online. They are pretty good, but can be a bit slow at times with their service.

I registered my Mack Warranties online, quick and easy. Mack considers the Canon 'L' lenses to be of the Professional class and as such you should use the 3 year Pro Lens warranty. I bought mine from Adorama. The proper one for your lens is $24.95 there. I wouldn't want to chance having the wrong warranty if service was ever needed.

That one says "Mack 7-Year Warranty for Lens - Valued from $400.01 to $700" and since the lens is $554.95 after rebate, looks like the right one to me.

$25 for 7 years is not that bad but I just had a bad experiance with Mack I used my credit card to purchase my 70-200 F4L and my credit card offers a second free extended warranty after the Canon warranty expires. So I'm at least covered for 2yrs. I trust Canon more then Mack to work on my equipment. I never buy extended warranty for any of my stuff. But I figured for an $800 Camera I would it came handy because I had problems with it 3 days after the Canon warranty expired but after the Mack experiance I rather pay out of pocket to get it fixed after the 2yr then to send it Mack.

just a thought but if you buy it with a visa crad they usually match the warrant you can call your visa company I did and after the year warranty I got with my purchase they add another year. john

I ordered it with American Express, which I believe does the same thing... if I run into any issues within the first 2 years (I really hope I don't) I'll check that out before I try to go with the Mack warranty I've got....

kinda odd with the ranting I've heard about Mack lately, though... a friend of mine and his dad said they've used Mack warranties several times and have always had great experiences...

Be aware that most CC companies do NOT provide extended warranties. Call your CC company BEFORE making a purchase.
