The swatchbook is just that, a book of gel filter samples connected with a stud through a hole in the corner. Those swatches just happen to be right size to use with a speedlite. Rosco was giving them out for free as sample books. Once they saw how they were being used they turned it into a product, hence the strobist kit. No hole in the strobist kit, looks like it might be fewer gels as well, but probably still includes the ones you would most likely use.

So does the swatchbook have all of the gels in the strobist kit??

the strobist kit gels are actually bigger then the swatchbook.
the swatchbook has every gel color Rosco makes.
you can use the swatchbook as speedlite gels, just use gaffers or extra wide velcro strips to attach it. just a little bit of a pain.

.
I'm not certain thats correct. When I went to a lighting supply store they had at least a couple of different rosco swatchbooks. If memory serves one had mostly colors used for stage lighting and another for cinema lighting. Probably some overlap between the two but enough difference for two books.

The Strobist gel set has five each of the most common gels that you will use, as well, so one of those books is great for multiple flashes.
CTO, 1/2CTO, 1/4CTO, the green ones as well, plus lots of others, and some special effects ones that Rosco chose.

Ah, thanks for the links. The second one is good. The strobist kit is more expensive but it's nice that it has multiples of the most useful one's so it may be worth it (perhaps). But I could get 5 of the over one's for the same price.
Hmmm.....

Look at the rosco web site, they list stores that carry the swatchbooks. If there is one nearby they give you a free swatchboook.
