QUOTE DPREVIEW 14th Feb 03
"US semiconductor manufacturer Atmel has announced a 35 mm eight megapixel CCD sensor, although not specifically targeted at the digital camera market it's clearly an indication that the development of large high pixel count sensors is no longer the preserve of a select few manufacturers. "The large format (35mm film compatible image format), high definition and high dynamic range make the device suitable for any application requiring high image accuracy. This full frame imager is designed for the Graphic Arts marketplace such as digital minilabs, retouch/enhancement stations, high resolution reprography, large format X-ray film scanning and high resolution microscopy applications."

This may be an indication for the new Canon sensor to be used in the new Canon camera the D80. This would make sense and also prove that it's no longer diffcult to produce 8MP 35mm footprint CCds.

I don't think so. My guess is that they will update the D60 to the D60 Plus with improve auto focus.

I hope it is not an other D30/D60 Body. We need a EOS 3 Based Digital SLR based on a pro Spec. The 1Ds price is to high. I am waiting to hear the announcement form canon in march. Lets hope it is a better camera than the D60 is.

My bet goes on an 3D or something like that. With the EOS 3 AF-speed an maybe the reduced amount of AF-areas (11). Hopefully it will be built on the EOS 3's body. But i dont think that Canon will put in anoher manufacurers CCD since they have their own CMOS, my guess is a 6-9MB CMOS with maybe a 1.3x FOV.

I can't see Canon dumping thier CMOS chips, they are too awesome.

Where in the quote did it say anything to lead you to believe it had anything at all to do with Canon? Just curious.

Sorry I was only pointing out that if other chip companies can overcome the 35mm footprint and produce 8MP then for a company with the clout of Canon it will be a breeze for them to produce an 8MP, 35mm chip...I think I can safely predict that Canon will not produce any more 1.6 conversion cameras unless they stick them in an elcheepo digi SLR.
