I'm shooting someone's 80th Birthday celebration this coming Saturday and need some recommendations on a shots checklist. It's being held at a hall and will have around 175 guests. I'm not getting any suggestions from the customer and have to come up with my own gameplan.

I'm bringing all my equipment there (except the tripod), shooting all RAW, Omnibounce on flash, 4 batteries for my Rebel, 8 AAs for my flash, 2GB of memory...am I missing anything?

I need help!

Actuall I'd take the tripod to use if they want any group shots done. The tripod will be better than hand holding.
Other than that I'm not really sure what kind of check list you mean, a check list of types of shots you want to get, of specific people to get shots of?

I guess the types of shots is what I'm looking for.

I'm not getting any suggestions from the customer and have to come up with my own gameplan. The good news is, if you asked them for a shot list & they didn't give you one, you're off the hook. ;-)
So cover everything you can, get some family group shots & the obligatory "spitting out the candles", & let your imagination cover the rest. Don't obsess over it, just do your best & you'll be OK.

One shot that I have always found to be extremely popular is a photo of the birthday person with the young children of the family. Almost every kid's parent will buy one.

Don't forget the camera batteries!!!!

I did that this Sunday and had to have my brother drive all the way to Brooklyn to deliver 'em to me.

Hey thanks for all the suggestions. I like the idea of asking the patrons what kind of shots they want. I've never seen a photographer at a wedding or large family gathering do that before so I guess I'll be starting a new photog trend...hehe. I guess that will be a nice way to "be a part of the family."
