Canon G2 - F2.8 - 1/60 second - internal flash- macro

Taken at an orchid show; hand held 'snapshot'. I used AV with F2.8 to get shallow DOF, set for flash on, set flash compensation for -1. Still looks like too much flash. Please critique. How much improvement if I had a 420EX?

I have no flash.. but I have seen a lot of flower shots. Did you take these at night?

I do not vote for flash at all! This shot is a bit "hi" with light ! But more distracting is (IMHO) a need to sharpen the center areas of the flowers.

Nope. No more artificial light here please. I vote for more natural light, because I see no purpose in "the uniformly exposed shot of a flower" unless it is for a seed catalogue.

Nope, flowers are natural beauties, and I would like to to see them all dappled in sunshine. Let nature light the way.

Thanks for your reply. Not at night, but in a large auditorium. Very poor lighting. My only option was internal flash or no pictures. I agree that the internal flash flattens the image. Set flash compensation at -1;
-2 would have been better. My wife bought an orchid. If it lives long enough, I'll try natural lighting with that one.

My wife's orchid is just starting its "budding" for 2003. I will try to take a shot too. With the G2 you will find that flower shots are "no-brainers" -- you just cannot miss if the light is great.
