I took my first air show shots yesterday and deleted all 190 of them. Some were marginally okay but nothing like the great shots above. I am having trouble with blurring the shots at 300mm zoom and low speeds 1/200th trying to not "freeze" the props. Do you use a monopod or an image stabilizer?
At high zoom, I either need to have a few drinks to steady my hands or learn a better method of keeping the planes steady in frame. Advice? (300D 70-300USM cheapy lens)

WoW deleted all 190 shots
first off 1/200 is not a fast enough shutter for front line 'Fast' Jets... for prop planes it is a good shutter speed, to get some nice prop blur
but with fast jets you want a much higher shutter speed.. and a good panning technique -- like all things Photography its practice

For Motor Car racing I use a monopod... but for jets I am too restricted even with big Lenses, some people manage ok with a Pod but i can not keep them in shot when they are shooting skywards etc.. for general runs down the flight line a pod is good.. but I get much better results without one

the weather is always a big factor cos if its cloudy and overcast.. its very easy to over/under expose them... for these shots above I took a meter reading from a grey barn roof, dialled in the settings in manual mode and shot away
although if its a nice blue sky day, I trust the camera to make a good job of the exposures

You also could do with a Lens upgrade by the sound of things... I am presuming your 70-300 is NOT the 'DO' Lens that costs a fair lot of money

your Camera is fine, I have taken some fantastic aviation shots with a 300D
I will dig a few from my files later to show what the 300d can do

as I said its all practice.. dont get disheartened because your first attemts were bad, a little practice and next time you should get some good shots
but you do sound as though you need a Lens upgrade

I used to be on the squadron where the F3 in #2 is from. 56(R)Sqn. They're up at RAF Leuchars at the minute, but they were at Coningsby in Lincolnshire when I was with them. I was on the display groundcrew team for a year. Got to see some nice parts of the world.

Gary.

great shots!

number three is my favourite - very menacing, and an unusual angle for a Tornado too.
