Anybody have tried the combination of the Canon 2x with the Tamron 90mm Macro ? Gotta give it a try, but now I am in the office and cannot try until tonight. But I am curious...

i could be wrong, but i thought the 2x only works with selected canon L lenses. let us know if they work. -alex

Thats my suspect. But I have to say that for example the 35-350 L is NOT a supported lens. But actually what happens if you stick the 2x behinf it is that you loose autofocus (normal, the lens @350mm is a 5.6, adding the TCon kills the AF) and you have erratic indications in the VF about the aperture (actually, you just have the lens aperture a not the lens+tcon aperture) but the exposure goes fine anyway. Sometimes I needed an extra long lens I have been able to MF with the combo (it actually gives a real 700mm + the 1.6 crop factor, that makes 1.120 theoretical) and take decent shots - at least better than nothing.
If the same applies to the Tamron, I'll be even happier, since in Macro you always end up with MF... so it will be worth a try. Would give me a 180mm Macro f/5.6. I can live with it. Can't wait to get home and try !!!!

I was going to buy a ef Tcon 2X from the market place and asked a member to try attaching it to the tamron sp90 he had and he reported that it did not attach properly.
I am going to try my kenko 1.4 to my tamron sp90 tonight after I get home. What would be sweet if it works. hopefully there wont be the sound of crunching glass.
If it fits it should still give AF with the tamron sp90 as it is f/2.8. Man I am going to run to my car right now!!!

Dante what you mean with not attaching properly ? A mechanical problem or just electrical ? If its the second one, it can probably be handled somehow like with the 35-350...

Unless the Tamron 90 Macro has a recessed rear element, the Canon teleconverters won't physically fit. The TC design is such that part of it protrudes into the back of the lens. Same story for the Sigma TCs.
Some older Tamron TCs don't have this design.

the user stated that the Tcon would not fit as the two parts would not allow attachment. Thats all I could get out of him. I think it has to do with what Caldwell is stating.
for what its worth, the kenko 1.4 fit the tamron lens great. no loss of af. i guess that make this macro lens 200mm with crop and tc factor unless my math is way wrong.
hmmm.... wonder if kenko makes a 2X Tcon?? off to search the web.

Hmmmm... I will give it a try anyway tonite, just to make sure. If it wont' fit, as it probably is, I suppose I'll go get a Kenko Tcon. Will bring my 90 along, so if it fits the 2x, better.

Went back home for lunch and tried. No way even to get close to see the two match. Well.. time to go look for a Kenko one and see if that works.

Wow... I can imagine what happens with that behind a 400... comes to 1200 optical, plus the 1.6 crop... a whopping apparent focal of 1920 ! And it seems that used with 2.8 lenses will keep the AF working... I think I must have one of those. It will be almost completely useless, but I can stick it behind the 35-350 (that makes an apparent 1,680) and have some fun. Sure enough the final quality would not be that much but... what the heck, for 200 bucks its worth the fun. I have a friend that is flying to NYC in a couple of weeks and he's going to get me some small stuff at BH anyway, so I save shipment and customs. I think I'll slip that in also :D :D

Sure. As soon as I have the thing in my hands I'll post a review. It will take some time, perhaps. He's leaving on the 22 and will be back after at least 2 weeks.
