Hi, I'm going to be in Seattle on Wednesday for my wife's Doctor appointment. We'll have 2 or 3 days to sightsee. I really would like to carry only one lens. 17-40 F4L or 28-135 IS USM ? I don't know just where I'll be going yet, just in the city.

Thanks:lol:

Not Seattle specific but for any one lens trip, my choice would be the 28-135. Maybe a real wide angle would be preferable in Europe for street snaps, but not sure if its true abt Seattle....

My 2 cents discounted by the fact that I dont have the 28-135 or a visit to Seattle!!

And, hope your wife feels well soon.

I live near Seattle, I wish I had a 17-40 for some of my pics. Been using the 28-105, not wide enough for my taste.

Seattle is a hilly little town with lots of vistas and waterfronts; if you like wide land and city scapes you'll want the 17-40. But that's my preference, it will all depend on what type of photography you like to do. The IS is nice for those cloudy days and of course the reach is better.

And, hope your wife feels well soon.

Yes, best wishes to you and your wife.

Hopefully the sky will cooperate and give you a nice sunset of the San Juans.

Hi there!

I live in Seattle and I would vote for the 28-135. Kind of a pain to not use the L glass in your 17-40..but I would use the reach of the 28-135. You can usually step back and take in most views without the absolute need of a wide-angle. I would recommend Alki or Kerry Park in Queen Anne for a cityscape.

Alki (28-105):

Tonight I was out shooting my 70-200 and lovin it.

Queen Anne (70-200):

One thing to remember, I'm sure you know this being from AK...our days are long here and you'll be in town near the Solstice.

I too hope your wife's visit goes well.

I'd have to agree with dkord, if you're going to be shooting mostly in the city the 17-40mm might be more suitable. If you are planning on using the 17-40mm lens on the 20D that would be equiv. to a 27-65mm lens in 35mm format on that camera. I've shoot lots of pictures in Seattle... and most of them are shoot in this range. It's a bummer you can't take both lenses though.

Hope the doctor visit goes well for your wife.

This is one of the most amazing views of Seattle I have ever seen. Not just from an aesthetic point of view, just imaging the technical issues of alignment.

Be sure to check out the HiRes version as well

Seattle's rain is widely overstated. While it's correct that we get a lot of rain, it's mostly rainy days we get. Bet you'll be surprised Seattle gets less rain than New York or Washington DC. More rainy days, perhaps, but when it rains, it spits, not pours.

Plan on using the same lens you'd use in any other US city this time of year with perhaps a bump in ISO due to overcast (we get a lot of those days).

Be sure to see Pike's Place Market for "fresh caught salmon" where the guys throw salmon around the store.

Hope your medical stuff works out great. We're outbound from Whidbey Island tomorrow AM for Harborview Medical Center for some work on my bride's foot. Have a good visit to a beautiful city.

I love this forum. Not only do I get good advice, but also lots of good wishes from people I don't even know. My wife has been battling cancer for 4 years now and she keeps going. We're going to see a specialist at The University of Washington Cancer Allience. We've been there before and they're dedicated people. We're both in good spirits and taking everything day by day. God Bless you all.:):):):)
