small product shots.

i have a 430exII. what would you use for product shots, smaller items. a soft box? what size?

this is with a 7D so it will and can be off camera.

You can use just about any type of modifier that will increase the size of the light source and give you soft, diffused lighting to work with such as light tents, umbrella, softboxes, diffusion panels, etc. The size you need would depend on the size of the products you are shooting.

For specifics, if you do a search in the flash forum using the keyword "product photography", you'll get several hits.

anything is possible, but a tent and two continuous lights (house lamps w decent bulbs) will do wonders... Its generally better to have two light sources, one on each side, but its still possible with one.
