hello...

i'm in a bit of a dilemma. i'm going to maui for my honeymoon in august and am having doubts about my 17-85mm IS USM. the fast focus and IS capability is nice but sometimes, my shots are just too soft, especially wide open. and i want my pics from maui to be nothing short of spectacular. afterall, it's my honeymoon!

so...i'm thinking about selling my lens, and purchasing possibly 2 others in its place to make up for the focal range. any L lenses are out of my budget, but are there two lenses somewhere within the same range as the 17-85 that you guys would suggest? i already have a 85mm/1.8 so i'm not worried about the telephoto end of the spectrum.

i was thinking about the sigma 18-50mm/2.8 and the ef-s 60mm macro...because i always wanted a macro lens :). i've heard that the 60mm is plenty sharp, but how's the 18-50mm?

I'd be interested to hear how the sigma 18-50mm/2.8 performs too. As for a recommendation, I like the 17-40mm/4 L lens. I used it a bit for my last wedding and liked it a lot. The feel and the construction of the lens is nice and sturdy! The 17-40mm lens is also great for landscapes.

It's funny, but I was actually considering getting 17-85mm IS USM for those times when I can only take one lens.. but you say the focus is "too soft", is anyone else having that problem too?

hey.. I started looking into the sigma 18-50mm/2.8 and found this website.. http://www.pbase.com/fstopjojo/17401850 (http://www.pbase.com/fstopjojo/17401850) It compares the sigma lens against the 17-40mm L. I was really suprised how well the sigma performed.

Oh, and here is a link that kinda compares the Sigma 18-50mm/2.8 to the Canon 17-85 f4-5.6 IS.. http://www.virtualtraveller.org/sigmavscanon/sigmavscanon1.htm (http://www.virtualtraveller.org/sigmavscanon/sigmavscanon1.htm). I don't think that this test is that great because it doesn't have true side by side shoots of the same scene. The photographer took the sample pictures on different days with each lens.
