I like the shot but the more I look at it the more cluttered the background seems. I think I might try again tomorrow night?

In our top story we have here the cleanest room in the history of children!

To me, it's the difference in background that's distracting. If the shelf with all the toys kept going to the left, past the power outlet and window, I think it would look more consistent, and less distracting. I like the business of the background though. Combined with the look the kid has and the outfit, it kind of tells a story like, "I just played all day, had to clean it all up, and now I'm ready for bed!"

Lighting is nice though, how was it lit?

Perhaps the background is a little busy, but it shows the environment and, as such, is very much part of the picture.

haha i was thinking the same thing!!

and it does not look so bad as far as the background because it is so clean, but i do think it would look better slightly less cluttered

I like the background. Especially Kermit. Lose the blank left side and it's a happy (sleepy) kid in his world.

i think it works. i like the slight blur between subject and bg. a tad more would be better.

i also like how subject is slightly brighter.

It's a little busy, but I like that your are also journaling your home at this point in life.. toys on the shelf... one day they will be gone, and you will smile at the thought of Kermit, children's books and mega blocks... :)

I love the bookshelf... I need one like that! :)

Happy Day!

Thanks all for taking the time to leave feedback.

When I took the shot I thought that less light on the background would do the trick as far as separating him from it. I thought the larger DoF was what made me not like the image though.

Turns out that

Nailed my issue with it. I think if he was on the left side of the frame it would have balanced it all out and made the shot more what I was going for.

This room sits off the kitchen before you get into the backyard during the day I get nice window light there but at night not so much. On the other side of the room I had a strobe set up behind me to my left with a shoot through umbrella and one just out of frame to the right with a bounce umbrella almost even with Jackson. I was trying to simulate the natural light that was in the room already. I think I did that but still wasn't getting the image I wanted.

Thanks for the help.

Here is a snap of the negotiations just before I talked him into sitting back down and posing for me.

I haven't used my AB's much at all this year. Do any of you notice a lot of red/pink/magenta type tones? I do, but I don't know if it's my monitor, my processing or the lights. I'll be messing with them this weekend so if it's the light's I'll find out. I have a grey card somewhere I guess I need to use it.

I like the whole photo in the first one...the envirnment adds to it, I think.

The last one looks a tad magenta-ish on my monitor but it isn't anything I would worry about.

Thank you, Maureen. I took a few shots tonight with the same flash head and they don't have the same cast. It was probably my processing.
