So you are not doing anything in post regarding color? What about settings in your camera?
You colors are so subdued.....like warm pastels. Very pleasing to the eye.
Thank you Lofty, and thanks 1980!
With the Zeiss glass I rarely feel that I need to do anything to the colors. I shoot RAW so the camera settings do not affect the final image. I use Adobe Lightroom for RAW development and my default settings have one slight change relative the factory defaults - I have changed the camera calibration from 'Adobe standard' to 'Camera standard'.
The general advice I can give is to watch the light. I always try to avoid harsh shadows - often caused by bright sunlight. Any presence of sharp contrasts will ruin the smoothness. Also you have to think about subject<->background distance and camera<->subject distance as the 100 MP's bokeh rendering can vary greatly depending on those factors. It can produce some harsh bokeh with loads of LoCA or it can completely melt away the background. When I can, I typically use live view to assess how the bokeh will look like in a particular shot.

Zeiss glass has remarkable color. I can't say if it's the design, the T* coatings or heck, magic fairy dust. But personally, the only thing I ever have to do is maybe add the tiniest amount of USM after the final resize. Colors, saturation, etc. are all usually outstanding.
Zeiss glass does have a slightly different color cast than Canon lenses. While Canon tends to be a touch warm, Zeiss is a little cooler (like Nikon glass). If anything, I prefer it and it looks more neutral to me.

The color reproduction reminds me of old Fuji Velvia film. Juicy good!

I feel you on this one, but not until I get a 1Ds III can I even remotely justify Zeiss glass investments. I'm LV-dependent when it comes to MF on dSLRs apparently. :(
I wish I could get a rangefinder VF on a dSLR body, hahaha.

The Contax Planar isn't that bad a price for the optics though (sits at around $1000). Would make it hard to choose. Cheaper lens thats nearly as good but you have to deal with stop down metering or pay $800 more for the ability to focus closer and an electronic aperture.

Hi:
I am very impressed at the photos taken by a Carl Zeiss 100mm 2.8 lens.
I have just bought a Carl Zeiss C/Y mount Makro-Planar T* 2,8/100mm lens. I would like to buy an adapter so that I can use my Canon 5D MK II camera with this CZ 100mm 2.8 lens. Would you please recommend me:
Where on Ebay can I buy a good adapter for this lens?
Is there any problem when you use Canon 5D MKII camera with Carl Zeiss 100mm 2.8 lens?
Your sharing is great appreciated!

What's really epic about it is its size. Not very portable. As you see I had to use my big tripod for it. The tripod head is a Manfrotto 503 HDV. It's a counter balanced video tripod head.

Thanks guys! :)
Julian: Sure, if you have somebody to carry your stuff ;)
Lofty: Stockholm is fairly nice during summer and fall but we have 1) a very long winter where everything is just gray and boring and 2) no mountains - everything is completely flat.
Matthew: Large format cameras have a much larger back than 35 mm cameras. A full frame camera has a back that is 1.6x larger than an ASP-C crop camera. A 4x5 large format camera has a back that is about 15x larger than an FF camera. So you get a much large field of view for a given focal length than you would with a regular FF camera. In practice it also means that you get a much more shallow apparent DOF.
If you look at the second shot you can see that without stitching it would require say a 16mm lens. The focus point was on the tree which was about 10 meters away. With a 16mm f/2 lens I would get a DOF of 6 meters between the camera and the tree and infinite DOF behind it. With a 100mm f/2 lens, I instead get a DOF of 0.4 m in front of the tree and 0.4 m behind the tree i.e a total DOF of less than one meter. That kind of thin DOF at a larger distance is what a large format camera can give you - and stitched panoramas as well.

I don't think the 100L is very flattering on close-up portraits. It's bitingly sharp without that "dreamy" look of the slight blurriness wide open. It's the best bokeh though.

The more and more I look at the sample images coming from Zeiss glass, the more and more addicted I become to "the look." I wish I could have a Zeiss 100mm but the bank just wont allow it lol. Looks like its a 35/2 or 50/2 for me. If I decide I like the Zeiss glass as much as I think I will I could become a convert...

Brennan,
Take a look at the Contax Plannar T* 2/100. Slightly different since the Makro-Plannar is a newer design, but very good results. They run around $1100 I may be selling mine since it's too frustrating to track my daughter.

This is my next to buy lens. Definitely.
Don't care so much about the macro abilities of it; I just love how it renders colors, sharpness, and rich contrast. That "it" factor, I suppose.
I'd love to see more portrait work done with it.

It's unforgiving and will show all the wrinkles and flaws. It does not have that creamy dreamy look that some lenses have due to lack of sharpness at wide open aperture. This baby is razor sharp even at f2.

Sounds to me like it would work more with environmental portraits, but not so much with glamor portraits.
Again, I'd like to see some examples with both. Thanking you all out there in advance.

Will you be making extreme print enlargements or preparing images for the web? If the latter, you may be hard pressed to see the difference.... and likely most other folks will not. Will the somewhat similar (and less costly?) Canon lenses not deliver what you require?

Since you have the 85L, I would go for the 100ZE.
Love all the things that can be done with this lens. But first I need a WA lens.

Yeah, the 85L and 100 Makro Planar seems like a nice combo. Low light with the L, long walk about with the Makro Planar (good as being a walk about lens due to the close focus).

The 85 is sort of a specialty lens and it's not one I'd really recommend as a first Zeiss tele. It is optimized for medium to large distances and can be really really awful up close wide open. The 100 MP on the other hand is superb at all distances and apertures.
The 85 does have a different and a more subtle rendering style that makes it worth having in addition to the 100 MP but if you have to choose between them the 100 MP is definitely the choice to make.

wow... those last two shots are some of my favs ive ever seen on this site
i bought me one of these lenses today, i didnt know it extended.
I also picked me up a 21mm 2.8
now all i need is a camera lol
walked into samys today and said "whats yuor best price on a zeiss 21mm, 100mm and 50mm?"
he said "same as everywhere.. those prices dont change, why do you want them today?"
i said "sure, but if they are the same price i get at B&H ima order from them so i dont have to pay 10.5% sales tax... thats over $400 just for tax"
he goes talks to his manager and says "fine no tax, but i only have the 50mm macro"
so.. i got the 21 & 100 with no california tax... great day lol
and CA wonders why its broke... had tbe sales tax been more resonable and the state not just make me pay $700 for my registration, i might be more likely not to buy online to avoid sales tax

Yes, AF confirm, electronic aperture, EXIF all works. In principle it is identical to a regular EF lens except for it lacking an AF motor. I use an EG-S precision matte focusing screen on my 5DII and it works very well.

denoir
12th of September 2010 (Sun), 06:53
Yes, the common wisdom is that glass is more important than the camera and generally speaking it's true. Here however you've reached a quality threshold where it is more complicated than that. To really get the full performance from the lenses you need to go full frame. These lenses were really designed for FF use and there is no point in letting the camera be the bottle neck.

@ denoir,
do you do a lot of editing to get these nice pics and colors?
denoir
14th of September 2010 (Tue), 15:05
Nope. I adjust the white balance on occasion when needed but usually no PP beyond that (and resizing for web use of course). The two main factors that impact the color rendering is the choice of glass (i.e Zeiss) and the choice of light. I typically shoot in the evening when the light is more interesting.

I don't know, but for some reason they have chosen to go with high-end primes for Canon & Nikon. I suppose they figure if that with manual focus you are bound to take it slower anyway. There are a couple of not so high end Zeiss zooms for Sony if I recall correctly.
You can of course use adapted Contax mount Zeiss zooms. The 35-70 Vario-Sonnar is supposed to be very good as is the 100-300 Vario-Sonnar. They are not fast but image quality is by all accounts superb.

Indeed. the 35-70 is superb! sharp and that zeiss rendering plus F3.4 isnt too far from from F2.8 lol. If only it started at 24mm also but still a great lens nonetheless. also its small and light for a zoom :)

its funny to see people be scared away from the zeiss lenses because of the manual focusing, but then see people like you (and i) who buy the 21mm because they usually say to themselves that manual focusing isn't so tough for a landscape shot and try it, and then not being able to get away from buying more of the ze lenses lol

Shooting in manual focus is something I am not used to. But, I am willing to learn. And judging from what little time I've had with my 21/2.8, I can say it won't be as difficult as I had feared.
In fact, as someone had put it, who knows, it might even make me a better photographer.
I am sooooooo looking forward to spending some quality time with my 21/2.8, and can hardly wait for this one.

wide angle like the 21 is a bit easier though as you get to infinity focus pretty quick. a telephoto on the other hand is a bit tricky specially when shooting with shallow DOF but with right focusing screen and practice, you get the hang of it :D

after playing with this thing for a week ive come to the conclusion that
a. always keep a tripod handy
b. nice flower + focus right = something really nice
it amazes me that just a slight rotation of the lens really changes the focus so much. A slight twist is the only difference between a perfect shot and being disappointing when you get home.
