Ciao Denoir, How did you get this one , you merged two photos in photoshop maybe ?

denoir

Cholla, no, it's a single image, only resized. The background you see is grass behind the flower - the shot was taken at an angle. No photoshopping, just the 100 MP.

Thank you all for posting your images and experiences with this lens. I must say the images posted have been fantastic!

I've been meaning to get a couple primes in the shorter focal lengths and both the Zeiss 50mm MP and the 100mm MP seem to be exactly what I need. I used to shoot Zeiss lenses with film many years ago and I've always reminisced about those days.

These threads and this forum has been a great source of information and inspiration. Thanks to everyone who has contributed!

wow... no more mono pods for this lens.

cant believe i took a shot of this bug on a flower and with just a slight hint of wind i end up getting his wings in focus and not his eyes. Ive never had a lens that needed i to be so precise with, Its exciting really.

I also took a shot of a my friends kid to show how well this can be a portrait lens (as long as you have something stable like a tripod or monopod) looking at that picture at 5600px at 400% the eye lashes are really clear... love the challenge of this lens.

It's great to see this thread growing and that more and more people have discovered Zeiss glass. I am however seriously worried about one thing... the absence of ducks in this thread! Ever since the great Henri Cartier-Bresson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartier-Bresson) photographers have made sure to make it a priority to take photos of ducks ASAP with a new lens in order to properly baptize it.

So to placate the gods of photography, here are a two duck shots to counteract the appalling lack of them in this thread ;)

Does anybody have any examples or experience using this lens with tubes?

I tried this lens with Canon EF 1.4x II Extender. Works fine on macro. But be careful...
Did the same with MP-E 65mm.. too macro.

Thanks. But why 'be careful'? Does the rear element protrude too far when focusing at infinity?

What about tubes? There should be nothing that it'll hit on them.
Also, would I be correct in assuming 50mm of (extra) extension is required for 1:1?

labbai
2nd of October 2010 (Sat), 14:00
The extender sticks out, so it works only when zeiss is extended... eh.
anyway, its not rocket science...common sense works fine. I did not use the extender before I checked it was safe to use.

Love the red and yellow in the trees Doc, looks like a "saturation with smear and fuzz" setting!! - how'd you get it like that?

Some from the garden.... (I particularly like how the second one looks like the ground has been lifted up to form a wall behind the plant - its dead level so I dont know why it looks like that??)

I'm between "second" bodies. First is 5D2 and I'll probably get another. But the 7D, for all the mixed reviews, might be a contender (for price). BUT, the idea of a 160mm f2 Zeiss on it is interesting. Is it as good as it sounds?

So I'm a fan of these Zeiss lenses (figures, cause I own one). However, I'm wondering how versatile this particular lens is? Would it be a good lens for portraits, walk-around, landscapes and still lifes (product photos particularly)?

If it's versatile enough, I'm considering replacing my 24-105L, as I don't see myself using the lens with anything below 105 anytime soon.

It's an excellent lens for everything you mentioned. Whatever you want 100mm for, this offers some of the best image quality you will find anywhere. For portraits of females be prepared to spend a little more time touching up than you might be used to.

This thread is filled with a wide range of examples of what this lens can do (scapes, scenery, close ups, still life, and some portraits).

Sounds good. And the pictures look amazing. :)

There's one major thing holding me back from this lens, and that's focusing. I'm pretty sure that this kind of lens demands precise focus, and I'm not sure I have the skill for it. I'm using a 5Dc, so no Live View or EG-S screen for me. Never handled a lens like this either. Though I mainly want the lens for landscapes (easy focusing), I would want to use it for other things.

I'm also very much an amateur photographer, and unfortunately, on a limited budget. Definitely something I'd have to give some serious thought to, anyway.

The focussing is quite precise. Pretty much three quarters of the throw of the focus barrel is for the immediate 1m in front of the lens (the barrel goes through nearly a complete turn for focus). I can definately recommend a tripod if you want to do macro work but other than that its a great lens to use - especially for landscapes or non-macro work. I generally use it on my 5Dc for short to mid distances and the subject isolation is fantastic.
As for focussing on the 5D, no problems here - I primarily use the focus confirmation beep but also use my eyes (with the standard screen) for backup confirmation.

Would there be a major compromise in IQ if I went for the old Contax Zeiss 100mm f/2.8 Makro Planar instead?

I could probably get that for cheaper..but I don't know if it's worth it.

Story is the new ZE is a new lens design and slightly sharper with better contrast than the older Contax design. I have 3 Contax lenses and I love them! I prefer manual aperture control to electronic control of the ZE. If I turn my camera on and off in a session I have to reset the aperture each time. One more thing to manage when time is often critical.

Yeah, I've heard of some improvements made with the ZE lineup. And I also prefer manual aperture control. Adds a bit more involvement to taking the picture and yeah, it can be convenient for time. Though I only have one lens w/ aperture control ATM.

If there's any charts or graphs out there that compare sharpness or whatnot with old Contax lenses to the ZE lens, that'd be great. Or picture comparisons.

I'm in doubts about this lens, but I want it so much! There are three options:

Selling the 70-200 F4 IS and 135L for the Zeiss
Selling the 70-200 F4 IS and 135L for the 70-200 F2.8 IS II
Not selling anything and be happy

Both are amazing! But I would first go for the 70-200MKII. It's such a versatile lens.

And you're selling your 70-200 + 135, so can you live with no AF in the tele part?

Wim, since it seems you don't use those lenses THAT much I would sell the 70-200 and 135L (I had both too) in a heartbeat for the 100MP.

I think the 70-200 f2.8IS II is way too heavy and obtrusive. It's a great lens, but I will never buy it.

Agree.

I also owned, and sold the 70-200 Version one. I was frankly uncomfortable to carry such a large, off-white lens. The 100 appears like nothing special but is my preferred focal length, no one "sees" it like they saw the 70-200. It was a great lens from a performance standpoint - no question. I just prefer a little more discretion...or a lot more in reality.

I forgot I posted this here. Thanks for the reactions! Even though you all make it very difficult for me ...

First Jochen. I use the 70-200 lens for landscaping (exclusively) and the 135L for the occasional portrait. The AF I don't need, but I wonder about the flexibility of the Zeiss. For landscape, footzooming is not an option as I want to capture perspectives. The 70-200 gives me (infinitely) more framing possibilities. How do you deal with this?

The 70-200 F2.8 II also has useful IS, so it could find its way into my bag for parties, dinners, ...

I really respect your opinion, Jochen. So you really make it difficult now. Thank you for that. ;)

Chmod, thanks for your reply! When you go out, which other lenses do you find yourself taking? The 70-200 would solve all my telephoto needs for landscaping and I wonder which others you take with the 100. I don't think I would use the 100 for street, where unobtrusiveness is required. The 50L fills my needs there.

Agree.

Ah Jelle ... I know you're thinking about the 100 too. Thanks for your answer! As already said above, I don't think I would miss the AF ... It's mainly for landscape and the occasional posed portrait.

Making it difficult for you is my pleasure Wim :)

I'm now using the zeiss lenses for about one year and there's no way back. I never felt this way about the (many) canon lenses I've had/have.

When I had that same 70-200 I mainly used it for landscaping too. It's very versatile, but in the end you don't get that same look you'll get with a zeiss.
If you really need all those framing possibilities, don't sell it. It can't be replaced with a prime.
If you want that zeiss look and can adjust to using a 100mm, sell it. You can always crop to slightly adjust framing.

I prefer using prime lenses anyway, even for landscape. That's personal.

At this moment, I don't think you should sell that 70-200 when I look at your comments because you seem to be really enjoying having the possibility to zoom.

Seems like everyone is at konijnenberg from time to time :)
No wonder it's always that crowded.

I just don't know what it's like to use telephoto primes exclusively. I think I can manage it (like I have done for other types of photography). It's just that I don't know it before I try it and then it's too late. :)

I just calculated the weight and the 85L + 100 ZE isn't even 100g heavier than the 70-200 F2.8. So for a weight reduction, I shouldn't consider the zoom. At the moment, I'm leaning toward the Zeiss. :)

Thanks everyone!

In that case it's fairly simple: why don't you use your 85 and/or 135L exclusively for a certain time?
Sure it's not 100mm, but you'll get the idea...

I really don't like the f2.8 versions of the 70-200. Too big, too heavy, too... white :D
It just screams for attention. The only times people started taking photos of ME was when walking around with the 70-200... and that was just the smaller F4 IS version haha.
Doesn't really matter, but I don't like that.

1 quick question, I only have 5D classic and I've seen a few people mention the EG-S focusing screen, is it compatible with the 5DC, on the few sites I've looked at it only mentions that it's for 5D Mk2 and just wanted to make sure it will fit before I buy one.

Thanks

The precision focus screen for the 5D is the Ee-S focus screen.

Hello everyone and thank you for sharing all those fantastic pictures.

I have an opportunity to buy a 100mm F2 ZF (Nikon mount) at an affordable price. Do you think it's a good idea to mount it to my 5dmkII with an adapter ? Is the green focus confirmation very important ? Is there any sharpness loss with a ZF instead of a ZE ?
