Thanks Jelle. I ordered at Studio 73. It may take a while but I've done all my other business with them as well.

What is you experience with this lens? how is it compared to your 85 L?
I know it is a MF lens. How easy is it to nail it?
How is the IQ towards the 85L?

Thank you!

Well, it's a bit too soon to come to founded conclusions, but I feel it is better than the 85L. The Zeiss rendering is something I love and the corner sharpness is amazing. The CA control is not good, but then again: the 85L has similar issues.

I will not sell the 85L. The f1.2 I use quite often. But I won't take it with me on hiking trips any more.

The focus is easy. Especially in rather good light. I have a special focus screen, though.

I had 100L and sold it for 100ZE. I liked the 100L a lot, but I like the Zeiss even more. The 100L was to me more of a pure macro lens, I never used it much for portraits or landscape - I didn't like the rendering. I did love it for flower shots. The IS was extremely good. The Zeiss is a more multipurpose lens for me. I can use it for macro and portraits and landscape with great results. But to be honest the 100L is much much easier to use for hand-held close up shots (e.g. flowers), because of IS and AF. I wish I could own both.

I saw a great deal locally on a used 85 ZE so I picked that up instead. I've been wanting to get something special for portraits and I thought this would fit my lens lineup better. So far I'm loving it. Has a nice soft creamy touch to it wide open. I'll wait for a good deal on the 100ZE before I pick that up, if I ever do. But at the price new, I could get a used 5Dii!

In the meantime, I'm very satisfied with my 100L and I find it versatile for what I like to shoot. And I'll just sit back and enjoy the works of art that you guys are posting here. Love it all.

I have an upcoming job which requires a macro lens. I generally shoot architecture so have never required a macro, so thought I'd do a little research. I recall that Canon had recently released an L IS Macro which sounded interesting so looked into it, found the quality seemed to be pretty good so I pulled the trigger and went for it.

As most diligent shoppers will do, I kept researching to reassure myself I got the right lens... but then I found this thread!!!

Have read every post from start to finish and been utterly amazed at the quality. I run both large and medium format systems (both film) and the quality is reminiscent of such larger formats. Very sharp, very contrasty, great colour and bokeh. My 35mm setup is all L Canons and a single Sigma 12-24 which has no direct peer, but I've never considered using 3rd Party lens'. The lack of AutoFocus I've seen to be problematic, but when thinking further about it, I generally shoot at a slowish precise pace, especially so with MF & LF, so manual focus really isn't anything new to me.

Luckily the Canon lens' hadn't shipped, so I cancelled the order, and switched to the Zeiss. I'm really confident, it'll bring the quality of image that I've sorely missed with the Canon L's. They are great for what they are, but do not exhibit the professional quality that a great Medium Format lens can, or for that matter a Schneider or Rodenstock LF Lens.

I haven't spent much time in this forum, but felt obliged to register so I could thank all of the posters in this thread who have shown me the light. I've never been 100% with digital since swapping from 6x6 & 5x4, but it's the lens' which truly have upset me. Looks like Zeiss could be the answer I was looking for.

flynny you will not be disappointed.

The autofocus isn't an issue at all with this lens. Not only does it have AF confirm, but because it is a manual only lens they actually put real time and effort into designing the manual focus system to be easy and smooth. As I posted earlier I can grab BIFs pretty reliably with this lens (not that I use it for that, but I did it as a test and it was fairly easy).

As for the rest... The images speak for themselves I think.

most people comparing 100ZE with the 100L in terms of macro. but in terms of potraiture, how does 100ZE compared with 135L in terms of rendering, sharpness etc. I have been eyeing zeiss for a while but the lack of AF draws me back till I get 35ZE for a start in zeiss glass. It is not easy to focus eventhough there is AF confirm on zeiss lenses, I tend to use LV for precise focus. I dont know if canon EG-s Screen will help me as it is still on order. Is it even harder to focus with 100ZE without EG-s screen? Your thought on these comparison are greatly appreciated

I believe the 100/2 Makro is much sharper than the 135L, even wide open. I don't own it personally but, I mean, look at this photo with the Zeiss, wide open...

This lens compares extremely well with the 135L. I don't think either one can be declared truly "better" at portraiture because they are equally excellent at it but in slightly different ways. Both have excellent bokeh and can produce images where the main subject "pops" out of the background, so that is kind of a wash. The working distances for each have their own distinct advantages, so again a wash. The ZE is sharper and has better micro-contrast as its main pros. The 135s biggest pro by comparison is fast and accurate AF. However, this pro is not as relevant in formal portraiture since you have time to nail focus. In kid photography, or less controlled situations the fast AF of the 135 gives it the advantage.

The EG-s screen is somewhat helpful, but not significantly so. However, the AF confirm should be accurate enough for portrait work at regular working distances.

The one thing the ZE does that the 135 L doesn't is the "painterly" bokeh of the guy in the background in this shot:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=11751132&postcount=648

By carefully controlling the subject to background distance you should be able to actually force this kind of bokeh, which you can't do with the 135L. However, the 135L can come closer to this bokeh than any other lens in the canon lineup. So even in this area the ZE only has a small advantage.

I'm not a too great fan of using the 100 MP as a portrait lens simply because it's too unforgiving. It's so sharp and has so high local contrast that it will produce unflattering photos of anyone over the age of 10 or not wearing makeup.

http://peltarion.eu/img/zeiss/zeiss100-331.jpg

Children are usually OK to photograph with it:

http://peltarion.eu/img/zeiss/zeiss100-332.jpg

Personally I prefer the 85 Planar for portraits. Or to be more precise, I prefer the 85 Planar for portraits of people who will most likely have an opinion about the portraits. When I get to choose freely then I generally prefer 35-50mm to tele lenses. The Zeiss 35/2 and 35/1.4 (older version) are personal favorites. Not very forgiving either though.

In regards to the overly high micro-contrast for certain portraiture, Nik Color Effex Pro (a plugin for Photoshop) has a tool that smooths out skin tones based on the color sample (so you use the color drop tool to select the part of the face you want to smooth out). And you can fine tune this by making it so the filter smooths out larger detail or smaller detail and change the scope of the skin tone so it'll smooth out similar pigments. Sounds like it would be good for this lens in that you won't have to apply a blur filter and screw with the sharpness where you want it to be sharp (like ones hair) or eyes.

I've used it with my Zeiss C/Y 50/1.7 and the results are great.

Fedex delivered my 100mm ZE today. Have only had 20min to play with it, sadly couldn't use it on this evenings shoot... But Wow!!! The immediate and unequivocal hit of quality is simply gob smacking.

In my experience, no 35mm lens has come close to the incredible colour, clarity, sharpness, contrast, bokeh and build quality to the 100MP. Can't wait to spend more time with my new baby!

I've used it with my Zeiss C/Y 50/1.7 and the results are great.

another thing that works well in lightroom is decreasing the clarity and increasing sharpness to bring back some of the sharpness. usually between -10 to -20 works well for me. and you can use adjustment brush to paint back in the clarity for certain areas.

I believe the 100/2 Makro is much sharper than the 135L, even wide open. I don't own it personally but, I mean, look at this photo with the Zeiss, wide open...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rodluvan/5254384087/

I really like the 100ZE only if I can nail the focus without LV all the time. We all know that zeiss glasses are sharp and renders 3D, but it will all be useless if we miss focus coz my eye is soooo weak at the VF therefore a comparison with 135L is required because of its fast and accurate AF. Thanks for the answers I will try to find EG-s to use with my ze35, if i'm happy with it, I will go with the 100ZE

Hello !

I'm new to the forum.

I have been reading this thread for a few weeks. All these fabulous pictures, along with the wise comments, were an incentive for me to buy this lens. I'm not completely new to macro nor manual focusing as I previously owned the Canon 100mm L and the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4.

I got the lens last Friday. So far the weather has been very cloudy and dark, but I'm impressed by the first pictures nonetheless - well, all the more when good focusing is achieved...

Here are my "least bad" pictures, all shot at f/2, with a 5D Mark II. Slight levels adjustments in PP, nothing else.

Now I have to work with it daily, to try and get the best from it. Fortunately, spring is on the way...

One of the ways to capture objects like that is to use directional lighting. The same principle with Flash is applied to natural lighting so in those photos it looks like snowboarder took the pictures as the sun was getting lower on the horizon and shot at such an angle that they're picked up by the light. The sun was probably at his 4 o'clock or 5' o'clock.

Well, I've done it. I've decided to rent the lens and see how it performs. I can look at all the pretty pictures in this thread, but I have to know how well it might suit my needs, since someday I'd like to own it.

I'm going to be testing its macro ability as well as how it performs in a studio setting. I must be crazy to consider using this lens at f/8 or lower to shoot models (especially considering how often it's said that the lens is too sharp for the job), but that's exactly why I'm renting it.

I have bad eyesight, Zeiss and Leica lenses. The Leica APO 100 starts generating moire' in the viewfinder when it's focused, easier than other lenses. The Zeiss lenses do the same.

So that's what you call it. The Tamron 90mm macro does that as well, but I never knew what to call it.

And after a thousand+ pictures, I have to return it tomorrow. I'm definitely sold on the lens - it's a great macro lens, and while I wasn't able to use it as a portrait lens as planned, I think it's probably fine for those purposes (just have to make sure the model's wearing make-up).

I'm not in any rush to get it, though, as my current line-up of lenses fits my needs right now. Zeiss glass would just spoil me :P

did you mean MA adjustment?

SMichaelPhoto
11th of March 2011 (Fri), 20:13
The focus screen has to be the exact same distance from the lens going trough the mirror as the lens distance to the sensor. Canon may have to adjust it. Since most people don't manual focus these days it can easily be out of calibration. Shoot some stuff really close and see if it is focusing at the right spot. Both of mine were focusing in front of the the subject. One camera was almost on but the other was way in front. I know how to to play with the spacers in between the screen and the higher parts of the prism and I fixed mine myself but I am not sure I recommend someone else doing that.

Ok, I love the 100MP ZE. It's my walk around lens (odd, considering my 24-105L and 70-200L are so much more versatile). I just can't seem to take it off my camera. So, my question is (and this is probably not the best thread to post on) what is next prime to go for? I am looking for something magical that has incredible microcontrast and the absolute highest level of sharpness. I would like something more than 100mm (I sold the canon 135L, so it would have to be better than that at least). Preferably, the cost would be less than $2000.

When you set your expectations a little high like alot of us you quickly find price becomes a stop sign. :p

You could save a little and consider the Leica APO-Elmarit-R 180mm f/2.8 which definitely should satisfy most folks & meet your objectives.

Although today it will be tough to find the Leica at the below price:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/793978

Todays Price:

A much cheaper alternative would be to consider the soon to be released Sigma 150mm f2.8 OS HSM macro which many say might even rival the non-OS version which is definitely a sharp lens.
Plus you can add a 1.4 extender on it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Leitz-60mm-f2-8-R-Macro-ROM-w-Micro-Adapter-R-Elmarit-/320674546897?pt=Film_Cameras&hash=item4aa9b144d1

Yes the R APO`s can be adapted but my pocketbook cant !

Regards, ;)

Yep, that's the one, only I don't think I paid anything like that. I have a 90mm f2, the 180mm f4, the 60mm f2.8 macro and a 500mm f8 MR. The most expensive was the 500 at about $400. A local shop had them on consignment from a widow of a photographer. I suppose my wife will one day do the same thing.

There were some wider lenses in the lot, but the rear elements protruded too much to work with all my bodies. One reason I picked up the Zeiss 35mm f2 ZE. Here's two more I played with a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am for sure considering the Leica 180 but then I saw this comparison: http://forum.manualfocus.org/viewtopic.php?id=13516 although there is some motion blur with the leica, I'm quite sure the 70-200L f4 is sharper in this example

The Nikkor ED 180/f2.8 is not the same lens by a long shot and neither is the 70-200L f4 believe me:

Do your research specifically on the Leica APO i posted above in the E-Bay auction ad.

That test is not with the Leica 180mm f2.8 R APO version.

Hi all,
I got infected by your fantastic pictures - and it is true!
Since yesterday Iam owning this lense and it is exciting. It is a graet pleasure to work with. I did a little comparision to my Sigma 150/2.8 macro and - it is sharper and the contrast, wow!

Thanks to you all

www.lensrentals.com allows you to rent them and apply your rental fee towards a new one if you like it. I think they are 1875.00.
