all this is full manual right, now focus confirmation chips correct? (i imagine not)

i just dont have any words to describe what i want to say about these pictures other than do i need glasses, because these pictures look far batter than i see with my own eyes, which is probably one big reason i got into photography. to create images that we dont see with the naked eye be it color, perspective, DOF, sharpness, etc.

wow... just wow.

you probably use a eg-s focusing screen, do you have a magnifying eye piece as well? also, why? im not a wedding photographer, but i get the impression that is about capturing the right moment. MF'ing seems like it would not be the best way to go.

Yes I use an ee-s screen. Not sure if you could shoot the 100 without one. At least at 2.0 anyway. As far as how fast everything moves. One, weddings are not as fast as people perceive them to be and on thing is for sure they are very predictable. Second auto focus is somewhat like a drug. You think you can't live without it until you force yourself away from it. Then you learn you brain is still better than a computer and your composition gets better because you are not dealing as much with the electronics so you shoot less give yourself more time.

One of the reasons I think the Zeiss lens example forums are better is because manual focus makes you take your time.

I posted some stuff on the 50 1.4 Zeiss forum also. I wanted to show everyone you really can still manual focus. I do have a second camera with me if I need it with a 24-105 but it is really hard to shoot with it unless I have to. You don't realize how much of a difference there is until you look at the stuff out of one camera with the Zeiss and the other camera with the Canon glass at the exact same f-stop and shutter speed. The difference in the situations I find myself in are night and day.

Basically the more I decided to "man up" and trust myself the better I have gotten. But then again you are talking to someone that hated 35mm and shot medium Hasselblads, Maimya 6s and 7s. I will pretty much shoot the Zeiss with pretty much anything (walking, dancing, down the isle, etc). I will post a B&W with at the reception on the 50 1.4 Zeiss page in a few.

The one other reason I like shooting the Zeiss is it is different and different in our digital world is good. You can take a good photograph with about anything but and most people use pretty much the same lenses and the same camera. Unlike the old days you can't just change the film to look different so you have to do it another way. Plus I HATE post work!!!!!

Great images in this thread, I finally sold my Canon 100 Macro, bought the 100 MP and I am finally joining the party...

...but I am sorry I have to spoil it :(

Yesterday I performed the first quick test session, and amongst good shots I was surprised to find a few with green/purple fringing like the following example (5D2, f/2, 1/4000s, RAW SOOC w/default Lr processing).
Yes I expected longitudinal CA, but not this bad. The lens is not APO but neither is cheAPO at all.
I still have to compare it with the 135L, but the 135L wide open never felt like it would backfire at me with this amount of CA.

Your comments are very welcome, I hope to be contributing with positive shots in the future.

Realizing most trees have already put on all their leaves but can you do another test on a subject matter other then pure white like the folks are wearing in this pic. Just curious to see the crop afterwards. The fringing colors in your crop look look almost bad as the old RGB convergence problems we used to get on CRT televisions around the outlines of white clothing.

This lens although is not in my bag yet is not known for CA related issues and specifically not when stopped down a little. Hopefully some of the owners will chime in for both of us.

Wide open on a white outline fringing might be something you will have to live with but i would hope not.

I suggest you send the member wunhang that recently posted the top photo of the two folks wearing white shirts since it was captured at f2.0 and ask him to post a 100% crop for comparison to yours:

I've re-checked the pictures I took that shoot and only found 1 out of a dozen that I took that had bad CA. It was a very sharp contrast in bright sunlight. Since it was a mid-day shoot, a lot of my shots were stopped down. The posted one above was one of the few in the shadows and was wide open but does not show CA on the shirts.

I just picked-up the 21 ZE and this 100 would be my next lens and i have been following all the reports from users for the past 6 months and your one of the first i have heard with a copy that exhibits this much fringing even wide open where it is known to sometimes reveal the CA fringing.

Bought it new. I am very picky about LoCA, and I am still hoping to get some feedback in this forum before thinking about swapping it.
Apart from CA at f/2, which is almost totally gone by f/4, the lens performs flawlessly, so I am really wondering whether mine is performing within specs.

Yes, everything is so expensive over here, which make sense to purchase from overseas. And guess what, the retailers (bigger ones) came out with a campaign that tries to get the government to impose taxes for all online retailers so to help softening the competition. It's silly how retailers go all the way out just to protect their own profit margins.

I've been out taking snaps of the cherry blossoms as the wave moves through Toronto. Here are two examples of using the 2/100 MP as a macro lens with a 12mm extension tube... 5D Mk2 on a tripod, mirror locked up, live view to focus.

The Flickr page has high resolution images (2400x1600) that show detail down to the level of pollen grain. Colour is as obtained from the camera. The images were filtered for noise then slightly sharpened.

Its a tough choice between this lens or the cheaper Canon AF 100/f2.8 IS USM macro.

Not trying to stir-up any controversy but other then the f/2 & drawing you guys tell me specifically why you chose the ZE over the Canon ? The Canon IMHO is no slouch either but i need a little friendly persuasion and money is NOT in the equation.

It's pretty obvious from both lens sample threads that they're both great lenses but the Zeiss is on another level. The microcontrast and color out of the CZ lenses are beyond any Canon lens I've seen. If you can live without AF and can afford either one then I'd choose the CZ for the wow factor alone. Maybe rent them both for a day if you need some convincing.

SMichaelPhoto

I agree the 100L it a really good lens and I like a lot of what I have seen in Macro where is is designed for but to me the 135 2.0 really gets on top of it at normal working distances. The Zeiss to me does both really well. The other reason for me is most of the better technically shot stuff, I have seen is basically shot on an Canon full size chip or a Nikon full size chip. The Zeiss gives me a unique look on that type of chip. Another reason for me is this is a lens that average Joe photographer stays away from!

To date I have shot Hasselblad, Mamiya, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Canon and even Pentax Medium format and the only other piece of equipment I have been this happy with was my Mamiya 6 back in the good old days of film.

@Silverfox - I had a 100/2.8L when I bought the 100 MP. My experience was that the Canon lens was _far_ easier to use hand held than the Zeiss and there was little difference on the tripod. Apart from the f/2 I don't have a real answer for why I sold my Canon lens... except that I'm trying to revert to the mechanical photography I grew up with and the tactile precision of the Zeiss feels good... very, very good indeed.

I guess im gonna just have to rent the 100ze for 4 days and if it dont WOW me like the 21ze i have does at the low end i will buy the Canon, since it would also be relatively easy to re-sell. Few months back i had an oppurtunity to buy the vintage CY100/f2 but passed on a pristine copy since i did really want the new design.

I simply need a lighter combo for the times i dont want to haul the 70-200MKII around and a nice 100FL will fill that need. I figure the 21ze, Sigma 50/f1.4 AF, & either the 100ze or Canon 100 IS macro will fit the bill on the 5D MKII.

MF or AF is no factor at the 100FL either since the Sigma 50/f1.4 fills any AF requirements i need with the fast moving grandkids.

Thanks for the replys, ;)

Can someone who has this lens take a photo of a watch or anything that has reflective surfaces? I do mostly product photography and was wondering if I shd replace my 100mm f2.8 USM with this lens. Thank you!

Here you go. SOOC 5D2, f/2, handheld 1/250s (too lazy to setup the tripod :)).
The lens is sharper than this, but I guess you are more interested in the CA.
Check the 100% crop.

Well - I was focused to the maximum that I could - so whatever the closest the lens allows - about 20cm I think.

I'm shooting on a 5D Mark II - You can crop 21mp quite aggressively before it becomes obvious and the image looks like you're "pushing" it too much.

The only problem I have found with these Zeiss lenses is that they are so good and sharp that the rest of my lenses now look flat in comparison. As soon as I tried these lenses I knew I'd have to get a few of them,

All hand-held.

What's LV? (Sorry for being stupid!)

The bush they were sitting on was the colour you see it there - bright, bright green - just like that. The light reflects down into the plant giving great light. It was overcast as well so no immediate harsh light - just nice, diffused light.

 Live View. Plus using 5X or even 10X dependent on the distance.

Providing its early in the morning hours or late and the Sun isnt too bright you can then still see thru the LCD fairly good and nail the focus. Thats the reason i like using the 60D due to its swivel screen for macro work or close-ups like you just posted. Hopefully Canon will add the articulating screen to the new 5D3 whenever it released.

It is a tough call. If it was the 85mm, I would do it in a heartbeat (Only reasons I still have it is that it is small so it doesn't take up much room in my bag, and I can't get much value for mine). But with the 135L, I would honestly keep it to have that longer distance shot.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I mostly shoot engagement sessions, weddings, families, and kids. I love macro photography, but my 24mm macro is not really what I need for that. I got that lens for free (so I can't complain) and have actually really enjoyed it, it has surprised me. I am pretty good with manual focus, so that doesn't worry me.
I am really just wondering how often I will reach for the 135L once I get the Zeiss 100mm. I can always hold on to the 135L- it will just put off getting the Zeiss longer.

SMichaelPhoto and wunhang- how often do you still use the 135L and for what kinds of shoots are you still reaching for it?

Thanks,

SMichaelPhoto

Taphtath,

All I can say you really have to be on top of your game to shoot moving subjects with this lens. Manual focus with moving subjects is a totally different way of thinking and the 135L is one of the few Canon lenses I really like. Even thought I shoot with AF Canon lenses when I need to I am not a very big fan of them compared to the Zeiss. The color and tones are so much better to me but I will say the 100MP is like a fine tuned race car. If you crash and burn it will be spectacularly obvious in the picture. The point of focus is so sharp it is incredible how much it stands out.

Have you shot completely manual focus lenses before?

On a side note. Small world to be on a forum with people all around the world and here we are in the same town.

little canon
23rd of May 2011 (Mon), 22:50
SMichaelPhoto- thanks, I think that was just the answer I needed. I am sure that I will like having the AF for weddings because stuff can happen very quickly. MF for engagement portraits is fine because you can take your time, but it is easy to miss a shot at a wedding.
I have not shot with a completely manual lens since the early 90s (I was a teen then). I often use my 24mm "macro" in manual. And of course always use manual focus for videos. I enjoy shooting manual though- for some reason it makes me feel more "real".
I do fear getting my first Zeiss. Not because of MF, but I fear I will then have to buy the 50 and the 21. I am afraid of Zeiss addiction and no money.

I love meeting people in the same town. Maybe when I finally get my 100mm you can give me some pointers.

Thanks,
Taphath

I am pretty sure once you get the first one it will not be enough. Like I have seen here and agree they are pretty much like a drug. With the lenses in your profile I would recommend starting with the 50MP or something wider. Much more room for focus error in those lenses and you are currently really strong in the long end with the 85 and 135.

Hi Michelle, I see you caught the Zeiss fever after trying the 35/2 ZE :) I think you will be really happy about the 100/2. Besides the typical Zeiss qualities, the bokeh from this lens is phenomenal, especially considering that this lens is labeled as 1:2 macro.

It really depends on how you use the 135L.

If you only use the 135L as a portrait lens or for stuff that is very slow moving then I would say sell it for the Zeiss 100mm.

If the 135L is a wedding or event lens for you then you have to decide whether the extra reach it provides over the 85 f/1.8 is really needed since 100mm really doesn't add much in that area.

If you rely on the 135L for any form of sports or action work where its fast AF speed is required then definitely keep it.

I spent a few days driving the coast of Maine. Can't wait to go back, just a beautiful place.

My first shot with this lens. I can tell with some practice this is going to be one of my favorite lenses.

I like that one even better! Softer light and I the outline of the frog is more telling.
