Underground photography with Powershot G1

I have a problem using a slave flash with my G1 when taking photos underground. I am aware of the manual shutterspeed and aperture features but was wondering what would be the best settings for these

The shots taken are generally blurry since I dont have access to a tripod. I have the aperture set on 2.0 and shutterspeed set to 1/80. Is this wrong???

What are you using to trigger the slave? The internal flash or an external? On-camera or off?

I use an external flash but don't have a slave setup, though I have heard reports of slaves firing late when using the G1, causing underexposure. Not sure why this would happen. Also, depending on your gear and configuration, is it possible the slave is not "communicating" with the main flash, causing it to not fire?
