View Full Version : 10D to 20D jump?

I have been shooting with a 10D for nearly three years now, and I am considering the move to the 20D. Is the extra megapixels and faster processor worth the jump? I was wondering if anyone else has made the move recently and found the change worth the cost?

I'd wait a little longer for the 20D's replacement..... shouldn't be too long before it comes out.

At this point i'd agree with David, depending on your budget. The information I have says there's a camera coming out before the end of the year that's between the 20D and 1DMkII, 12.8MP, from memory it could be called a 5D or the 3D, I forget. Not just another rumour.

A 3D? Does this mean I have to wear goofy cardboard glasses to use it? *s*

And you got a fine camera!
I currently don't need 12.8 MP. That would mean I need a new computer, new storage etc etc. I am happy with 8MP and am quite sure I won't need more for at least a couple of years. I inly have so many walls that need new wallpaper.

Skip a generation & spend the money saved on glass.
In the D30/D60/10D/20D evolutionary chain the improvements have been incremental - only rich tech-heads can really defend upgrading each time.

I appreciate the info and advice. Based on my research I was having a hard time justifiying the jump, but doubling the pixels in a 5D would be justification if the camera stays below the price tag of the 1d and 1ds. Has anyone heard anything on the price range being slated for the next generation?

If Canon follows the same price pattern it has for years the new Canon will priced like the 20D was when it first came out. If memory serves, the 10D was priced the same way. My guess would be under $2,000 with some kit lens included.
I think you are wise to wait my guess is that the next replacement for the 20D will come in the fall in time for the Christmas Season. If the tool still does the job for you keep it. The world is filled with to many "maximizers" buying gadgets with features they'll never use. In the end it’s the skill of the photographer not the equipment that matters. I have a friend that always wants the latest greatest gadget, once it looses it cutting edge status he moves on.

I am doubtful that anyone else can tell you whether it is worth the cost for the advantages of offer with the 20D. Some things you have to decide for yourself.
I have the 10D and every time that I shoot with it I find that it performs well and gives me what I need. I will replace my 10D with a newer SLR, but I am thinking of waiting another 2 or 3 years. In the meantime I will save for an L lens or two.
The significant improvements that I can see with the 20D would be:
Faster shooting speed of 5fps instead of 3fps.
Larger JPG buffer of 25 shots instead of 9.
Writes data to the CF card faster, ready to shoot faster after a burst.
8MPix instead of 6MPix.
Faster turn on/wake up (though you can keep you 10D ready to shoot).
I don't think that it is worth paying the money to upgrade unless you really do need to shoot at 5fps. The extra res is not that big a jump, if 6MPix is not enough then you are better off waiting for the replacement to the 20D.

Add operation speed to the list of advantages - it's a huge one. I used a 300D not so long ago and I got really impatient waiting for it.

if you shoot sports or in harsh light...bite the bullet and upgrade, i find the 20d much nicer in these situations thatn a 10d...you can push the 20d a lot further in harsh light and I find the AF a lot better. Hated the AF on the 10d.
if not, hold out and just dump the bling on nice glass...but we still got some ways before a 20d replacement is going to be in stores. Even then, the 20d is solid enough to where I doubt I will upgrade, after using it so much, only way up I could care about enough is a 1 series.

Or, do like I do and buy a 20d cheap when it's replacement comes out. I generally keep my technologies one step behind. I've always done it with computers and am now doing it with cameras. I love my 10d (bought used for $625 in perfect condition with 1,000 shots) but when I can get a 20d for $600 or $700 in a year or so, I may make the jump. I'm really dreaming of a used 1dmk2 for about $2k..........
5d? 12.8Mp? I don't want that much resolution. I'm filling up my hard drive and DVDs as fast as I can go now..........and my pictures look great (atleast as great as they can given my sheer lack of talent!) Buy glass; always concentrate on the glass more than the body.

I'm continuing to use my 10D while I hold out for the 20D's replacement... We'll probably see it next spring.. I'm quite happy with the performance of my 10D
Looking at camera history, it will probably have more features than the 20D and cost less :)

I would say the difference between the 5d and the 20d might actually be greater.
For the price of a 20d new, I was able to buy a 10d and a couple or more lenses second hand. I think the 20d body would struggle to match the 10d with a lens.
If you have the money get the 20d, or stop messing about and get the 1dsmkII or whatever it is. If you don't, the 10d is better than no camera. It's all relative.
The point is, they are both fine cameras and will take great photos in the right hands. If you are not unhappy with the 10d, why change. If you wait a few short months, no doubt the 20d's will start to tumble in price (so many people have them –*and would change to the better model without a thought).

I really appreciate all of the advice and you guys have convinced me to just sit tight and wait for the prices to come down on the newer models. I have shot over 6000 frames with this camera (10d) and have had no problems. It has been a rock solid piece of equipment.
Now I have a question about glass. The new L glass is suppose to be the best, but my question is simply this, will this glass improve the clarity of 10d shots? And will the IS models improve unwanted blur due to movement. I purchased two of the midrange lenses (28-105 USM and 75-300 USM) and they have been serving well and I have produce some really nice pictures with these combination.
Can anyone give a suggestion on what L lense would give me the most flexability? The majority of my time is spent on landscape and nature pictures, with a sprinkle of portriats.

Yes, good lenses will make for better pictures, and IS will help reduce camera shake. To select lenses try having a look at this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752). From memory, the 17-40 or 16-35 (might have the numbers a little wrong) would be good, or perhaps the 10-22 EF-S, which isn't L but is a very wide angle for a 1.6X crop camera.
