View Full Version : WIDE AND FAST. THE QUEST CONTINUES...

I'm always on the lookout for fast lenses. Right now, for shooting bands in clubs, I have my 50mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/1.8.

Maybe I need to come out of my cave more often, but only today did I learn of the 28mm f/1.8. A nice price (within my budget), and would fit well with my primary shooting.

I also found the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 for about $130.00 less than the Canon, but I'm wary of Sigma lenses, due to having tried one on my 300D and getting the dreaded "ERR 99".

If anyone has comments about either, or both, I would love to hear them. I'm starting to get that "gotta' get another lens" feelin'.

As always, muchos grassyass...

28 isn't that wide on a 1.6X crop body, there are wider primes and zooms...

What are you taking photos of that you need wide and fast?

The EF 28mm 1.8 is a great little lens. It is as small as the 50mm.. and has the same fast USM of your 85mm. Very handy and easy to bring along.

I take a lot of photos of bands playing under stage lighting. That's not always the best environment for a slower lens.

I'm thinking about going wider so I can get closer; different angles not possible with the other two 1.8's I have...

the 50 1.8 isnt fast...and after buying the 85 i couldnt stomach my 50. Id go with the 28, or look into the sigma 30mm 1.4 that just started shipping out

By "fast" I'm not referring to its' focusing, but rather the shutter speeds it allows. Believe me, there are plenty of things about the 50mm f/1.8 I don't like, the speed of focus being one of them.

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is rather tempting. I'll be interested in hearing opinions about it once it makes it to the shelves...
