Greetings.......after a breather of two weeks which involved selling a few lenses (thanks Drisley and Toogy), my latest acquisition arrived today. The mythical and magical (and scarce) Canon 35f1.4 L! Managed to get a great deal on a mint copy and have been looking forward to seeing if it's all that so many say it is.........and it is!!! I really like this focal length on my 1D; seems just right for everyday shots and it focuses very close as well. The colour is amazing and contrast and saturation are tops. I love sharpness and this baby does not disappoint! DoF is very narrow at 1.4 so you better be sure of your focus point........I bet if I still had the DRebel I would probably find that this lens was soft, just because the AF is critical and you better have a fast shutter! Of course, my testing of any lense requires my beautiful daughter Julia. Here are few from today........enjoy and thanks for looking!

Wow, that really looks sharp and nice shots. You don't by chance have the 24/1.4, do you. I've been wanting to see what sort of distortion there is on head shots with that lens.

Gorgeous dude, just gorgeous. I really want this lense. But I have to get a 135L first.

But I'll have it eventually :)

Terrific photos!!! I especially like the third shot...the contrast of the color against the black background makes your daughter jump out of the frame. Her expression just melts my heart.

Nice lens! The DOF is very notisable, especially in shots #1 and #2:

First I noticed how background on #2 (window, less then a foot away!) was out of focus while face was crystal-hsarp. Then I took a second look on #1 and noticed that you (or is it the lense :) managed to get the neck opening of the T-shirt so blurry while keeping face perfectly sharp... wow!

As far as the shots go - I am not sure I like the shadows you got from the direct flesh. Maybe bouncing it off the wall or ceiling whould make shadows "softer"...

Anyway, the lens is absolutely stunning - good luck and have fun with it!

Absolutely georgeous images, as always :D

Love the first one! As to the look on her face in that picture ... was that when you told her how much of her college money is left now daddy has bought all those nice lenses

Best regards,
Andy

Did you do any post-processing on these? They look awesome!

I think schmoelzel was born with the skillz.
I remember when he bought his first lens from me 1 year ago, his first images looked almost this amazing.

I think you have to be inherently "right brained" or artistic vs "left brained" and scientific.
Well, at least it helps. I am left brained, and it takes a lot of practice for me to improve.
I think one of the best pictures ever taken with my camera was a result of me letting my friend's 7 year old daughter take a snap of her dad and sister. It was amazing! And according to my friend, she is very "artsy" and likes to draw, paint, and write (and is good at all of them).

Just like many things, going to school won't guarantee you will be a success, although it will improve your ability within your limits. Genetics, genetics, genetics. They can be unfair sometimes.

And I do believe your last statement about all the up and coming photogs. I guess it's the ease of digital that is luring everybody. Heck, in the days of film I had a little point and shoot I never used.
It wasn't until I tried my first digital camera that I really fell in love with photography. I have a feeling that pretty soon there are going to be as many wedding photographers as there are web designers.

The last bodybuilding show I was at, I think there were more people with cameras in the crowd than there were people without cameras. And not just digicams, but expensive SLR's. One young guy I met (with a DRebel and 17-40L) was telling me that he goes to a photo school, and he was going to "blow away" all the other photographers at the event, and make money selling pictures.
I used to have this attitude about things I learned, but I have realised that unless you are the cream of the crop, it probably won't happen. So, now when I go, it is to have fun, learn, and if people want to buy pictures, then great. Even though I get invited to take pictures at these events, I supply the pictures currently for free. I know that as soon as I ask for money they may just drop me for one of a huge number of others starting out.

Whew, that's my take. That was rather cathartic :)

It helps to be utterly passionate about quality, not just image quality but content quality. Not being afraid to experiment and fail. I think having a beautiful daughter that you love so very much in combination of all these things probably really spure the learning and increase of skills which schmoelzel has lots of. Great pics as usual. I wish I also had you skill of picking up great used equipment.

schmoelzel, do you use PS for post processing? I don't want to talk for schmoelzel, but I found that there does seem to be at least some post processing in all digital images, if that be some tweaks in the raw converter to the final USM sharpening final touches. It is this work flow that I believe was at least on of my milestones in the increase of photo quality.

They have to be amongst the nicest shots I have seen on here, and that is saying a lot as there is some great stuff.

Thanks to all for the kind comments!! As I have said before, I am purely a hobbiest and take A LOT of shots to come up with a few good ones!! Don't know if that translates into skill or luck!! :) I do have the world's cutest daughter and she is all the inspiration I need to keep taking pictures. If I was a professional, I am not sure if this would be quite as enjoyable........if the shot doesn't work out, just take some more!! I started a year ago with a DRebel (still a great camera) and the kit lens; still trying to find my favourite focal length and favourite lens; but I think that is a common trait amongst most people on this forum. Thanks again for looking and keep taking photos!!

Well I can't say more than what has already been said - the last three are my favorites and I agree about the black & white conversion - its a powerful image!

Really nice! I love the 35 1.4! I have a hard time using anything else after putting on that lens.
It really is one of the best of the entire Canon line.

The color images are wonderful - but I love the black and white... not sure why - just do. Great contrast... there are way too many BW conversions that don't have pop.... this one does.

Thanks again for all the kind comments and the questions......really liking this lens especially the FoV that you get on my 1D (49mm). Seems like what some call a 'normal lens'. It does have something about it (colour and contrast) that make some shots appear 3D-like. Money well spent in my opinion.
Someone asked if there is post-processing......yes!! Shadow/highlight tool and USM.........

Your use of the the word 'all' is very liberal!!!:D I could only hope that 'all' my shots turn out like this; but that is the beauty of digital!!!
