Attended a small air show at the New Garden Air Field on Sunday, June 12th. Some of the planes did not show up, for what ever reason. The ones that were there were very fine indeed. I went to the show with another photog who was well versed in the models of the planes. He enhanced the experience greatly.

The day started with some aerobatics. Most of the shots were with my 1D Mark II and 300 2.8 (non IS) combo. The ground shots were with a 24-70L. I tried to use slower shutter speeds to achieve a nice prop blur. This resulted in many less keepers. All were shot hand held. Thanks for looking.

This is a shot with the bomb bay doors open. I thought this was a nice touch by the pilot.

This is the plane in Infrared. These vintage planes seem made for an IR shot. Shot with a Canon G1 modified for infrared capture.

Here was my companion for the day, my six year old son Jacob. He was very enamored with this plane. I was told it belonged to the owner of the air field.

Rob,

great shots :D

I bet your son loved it.

I find the infrared shot absoultely amazing. At first glance, it looks like an authentic shot with crew if the plane was stationed somewhere like Hawaii

Thanks for sharing!

Best regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy,
My son enjoyed this show more than the Blue Angels show we saw a few weeks ago.

Thanks Dew. Sorry I can't put you out of your misery.....I don't know what they are either. I assume the "tail forward" shots you are referring to are the ones shot when the planes were part of the "static display". The shot seems to be the only way to get a part of the plane without people appearing in the frame. I saw a similar photo, that someone did with a long lens, after the pilot had started the engine. It gave the appearance that the shot was taken "in flight". Very cool technique. Thanks for commenting.

Nice stuff, it looks like the ss was very low for the inflight shots. 1/250 works real well, and you still get nice blur. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=79273
The IR is great, but too many people, but unless you get to airshows when the sun rises that's always a problem.

Thanks for the tips Tim. You should know, you have an outstanding gallery. I will give other speeds a try next time.
