I have no experience in this field. I plan to make a barn door mount so I can increase exposure. Will longer subs bring out the color of the nebula or is a filter of some sort necessary? Thank you.

That's a nice shot all the same, but you do need fairly long exposures to get the North America Nebula to appear. I use a Light Pollution Filter which has brought it out quite nicely through my nifty fifty and with a 90s shot, with tracking of course. Other filters may help too...but I'll leave someone else to suggest what types.
