To be honest, no. I'm sorry because i know this is gonna sound harsh but that background is hideous. Honestly, aside from some of the font choices your existing site is MUCH nicer. The thing to remember is that with a black background and something to isolate the photo from it (like the white border) is that your photos are more emphasized since your eye is more drawn to the color of them than the black. The new blue background makes my eyes hurt and thats just from a small thumbnail. Also, the spacing between the elements is distracting makes them all feel disconnected from each other.

#1) I recommend getting a logo made. You can get one on 99designs.com for about $250 or if you're on a budget try to set a type that represents you.
#2) The background on your image should be one solid color. You want to accent your photos, not distract form it with textures and bright colors.
#3) That New Times Roman font is plain. Try a couple of different fonts. Not more than 2.

So I should leave my site the way it is?

It looks fine the way it is now. Do some minor changes here and there, but still pleasing to the eye. Maybe a flash entry into the site with your best shots of what you specialize in, then its moves onto the main page. Your new design doesn't look so hot.

Definitely switch to a nicer font, I'd suggest either Georgia for a serif or Verdana for a sans serif, as the are the 2 most web safe fonts.
Flash on your index/homepage is fine, but I would skip it for a splash page, as many crawlers get stuck there and wont index the rest of your stuff. In other words, google and others have a hard time adding you to their search databases.

So should I make a front page?

Your home page is fine, don't make a splash page. You might add what you do on your home page though....better SEO. ;)
EDIT: Also, you need to think as a customer that is searching for a photographer on line. Do you search for "Professional Photographer Upstate South Carolina"? I doubt you'll search for "professional", so I'd lose that and include some of your specialties. ;)

If you are concerned about being found in search engines, then yes, I suggest adding some text on your home page. A simple "My name is [] and I'm a blah blah photographer located blah blah".
