Hi There,

Being a newbie on DLSR, I have been browsing this forum for a couple of months and found it's very useful.

I shall have a long trip in July and thinking about buying a digital wallet (those harddisk type PMP) for offloading the images from CF to the harddisk. Of course, I need to have the function to copy the images back to my PC when I return home.

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

i just tested out my image tank G2 i got off of ebay and i payed 47 dollars for it shipped and i had a notebook 2.5 inch HD sitting around so i used it and it works like a charm.

it was alot cheaper than buying another CF card which i might do later on..but now ive got 10 GB of storage for 47 dollars :) i think i did pretty well..

i have an old version of the image tank - and its great - just copy my CF cards onto the harddrive and then copy them to PC via USB.
cost me £40 and I had a laptop Harddrive available which had rarely been used.
so thats way to go

heres a review of the G2

etaf..how long does it take for you to copy 867 MB or close to that from a CF to your image tank ?

a while - about 15mins I think - and as its an old one its uses USB1 - but I have 1GB card and two 512MB cards - so whilst its copying one i shot on the others.

Also when I get home I plug the image tank into the laptop or PC and just let it copy whilst i do other things - so i'm not really worried about speed tomuch, more about cost - i only paid £40

hm it took me like 20+ min to copy 867 MB and i have the G2 OTG..is my HD that slow ?
when i listen to it ..it only writes to the HD every few seconds..i dont think its the HD holding it up..
what could it be ?

I have gone on a 8 day trip and downloaded 20GB of pictures to this. It is fast, like 8 min for 2 GB to transfer from CF card.

I love it. I know it doesn't display the RAW files, but you can USE the JPG+RAW in order to get to view the image.Or you can just transfer the RAW files and see the image names in the File browser.

You can also use it for MP3, AVI, and other formats. Good Battery life.

Really cheap here. I ordered it here and got mine in 4 days.

i really should time the transfer - to be honest it may be a lot longer
here is a review of the G2 and some times for CF card transfer

Does anyone know if the battery is replacable on the Image Tank G2? I am thinking it is not so you get 500 recharges and you are done. If you are a weekend warrior like me that gives you 10 years! Not that big a deal but I have had a few Li-Ion batteries get weak kind of quickly.

I bought a Media Buddy made by Digital Foci on Ebay for about $200. It has a 30GB capacity. you cannot view images on it but I shoot in RAW and all I wanted was bulk storage.

This is the link (http://www.digitalfoci.com/media_buddy.html)

I think I will be happy with it on vacation and I also share my music library with friends and family using it as a portable drive.

Does anyone know anything about whether the battery is replaceable?

Just a quick question on these image tanks and photo storage, what happens if the battery goes dead, do you lose the pictures on it like in the case of a PDA or does it retain the images and all you do is insert new batteries.

It appears that the ImageTank uses a standard Laptop hard drive, which means that you would NOT lose the information. Most of them do use hard drives (like your computeR) and not Volatile media (like your Palm).

no as said works just like a laptop, mine works from mains, car or battery.
If the power failed during a copy like anything that could cause a problem.
