preventing mouseover popups

OK, this is a little off topic, but a couple of web sites that I visit have those annoying "informational" popups that occur whenever I move my mouse over certain text. Does anybody know how to block or stop them? They're annoying as he**.

All my searching has shown is some no-name popup blocker or another. I don't want to use any software that isn't trustworthy, and I'd prefer if I can just set IE in a way that will prevent them without having to have more software running on my machine.

Firefox is your friend. Be sure to check out the AdBlock extension while you're at it. Do away with 99% of online advertising - never see a banner ad, google ad, pop-up, under, over, etc... Best thing since sliced bread.

Check your browser preferences. You should be able to block pop ups.

These aren't regular popups, like the old days when a new window would open up. That issue's been solved. These are little mini-windows that jump up when you pass your mouse over certain marked text. For example, go to this page:

put your mouse over the word "Software" in the article text and a stupid window will pop up in the middle of the article. Same with "resize image" later in the article. It's a new way of advertizing that avoids popup blockers.

Might have to give that a try. I haven't used firefox in probably 3 years or more.

That, or try NoScript to selectively block/allow Javascript from sites.

Use Firefox and install NOSCRIPT. It will allow you to selectively block scripts...It will solve your problem quickly. Regards, 110yd

Not all popups are js, and in fact, many are actually flash (or js hidden in flash). unless you use flash for something (youtube, games, etc), then you can always uninstall it, letting you load pages faster and not havign any of that crap show up

Is this AdBlock reputable? Will it also prevent me from freely accessing and using financial websites? I tried turning off scripting but I couldn't use the online bill-paying services at one financial institution when I did that. Probably more than one, but I only tried that one.

This stuff isn't necessarily ads - just informational crap that pops up when I merely pass the mouse over the active words or signs. I just want the "mouseover" crap disabled. That's all. Who ever thought of that idea ought to be strapped down in a room full of hungry mice. We'll see how well he/she likes "mouseover".

With 5 stars and 63 million downloads, I think it's been thoroughly tested ;) You can add exceptions for sites you know are trustworthy.

I wish we could get rid of the "titles" on the thread links that pop up on this site. Scrolling down a list of threads here is so annoying as the first lines of the posts keep popping up. I always have to move my mouse so it isn't on the thread titles when I scroll.

See the table that says disable. Go to it and click where it says "Click here to disable". You don't need to install anything. It will set a cookie that will disable all Vibrant In-text Advertising.

I tend to agree - It wouldn't be so bad if MS would provide an on/off switch for the mouseover function and be done with it.

I'm analyzing the AdBlock program right now, but I may check that one out also.

Also set inprivate filtering to "automatically block". For some reason, I had disabled that "feature" on IE.

You guys can use a custom stylesheet in your browser, which would then turn off anything you don't like, too... The browser should respect and use the user stylesheet first, before going to the page.

Alot of sites are using vibrantmedia.com as ad revenue and the info with mouseclicks are very annoying.

Popup blockers wont stop it, but you can add the domains "intellitxt.com" and "vibrantmedia.com" to your browsers addblocking filter and you shouldn't see them ever again.
