What's a good travel bag that is just small enough to hold a 40D along with a 17-55? I want to travel light and that's all that I will be carrying. What's a good bag to have? And any good lens bags/cases around to protect just the lens?

Are you talking about a backpack or would a sling bag work? I have a Cirrus TLZ 25 (http://products.lowepro.com/product/Cirrus-TLZ-25,1914,8.htm) and it works great for my XSi + 28-75 plus a lenspen, battery, memory card, etc...
You could try a 4mdh (I think that should fit it) or a fastpack 100 or a slingshot 100.

The Domke F-5XB will hold that very nicely.

The Domke F-5XB is what I use for my 5D2 and 24-70 and there is NO WIGGLE ROOM! For your 40D with 17-55 it should be just right, and you can fit a few CF cards, batteries and maybe wipes and you're good to go. It looks like a regular canvas bag, too. It doesn't scream camera bag.

Just got mine. Didn't think the velcro would be as loud as on my Crumpler but still very happy with my first Domke. Fits my 50D + 12-24 Tokie + 50mm f1.8 + 580ex II with some room to spare for small accessories like a lenspen, extra batteries, cleaning cloth and my wallet. Yet still maintains a small form factor.

That is easily adjusted to anything you want. Simply get a bit of velcro and press it over PART of the original velcro. Leave enough uncovered to still grip to your satisfaction. Of course, that will work on your Crumpler too.

Then people wonder how I fit the whole thing in there. :)

4MDH from crumpler would also fit the camera, lens, and flash.

I have lowepro Nova 2 AW. I think the new version is called Nova 180AW.
This is the bag that I use when I want to travel light. Typically body + lens + flash. This would perfectly fit your 40D, 17-55 with reversed hood, and your 430ex.

Thanks for the tip. The Crumpler doesn't really bother me now since the new MDH series put built in velcro silencers.

it depends on what sort of bag you want...there are holsters, sling bags, shoulder bags, and belt packs. i have a think tank holster which is great, and i also have a lowepro inverse 100aw belt pack which also works well (it is for sale however as it's not quite big enough for my newly acquired nikon d3)...the best advice will come if you know how you want to wear the bag.

Is the 5MDH the smallest bag you need for a 40D + lens and possibly a flash or can you go smaller still?

Depends on the lens. The Domke F5Xb will take my 20D and 24-70 along with the 580EX flash in the main compartment; it's an inch or two smaller than the Crumpler in width x height and about the same length.

I can fit my 10D + Tamron 17-50, Tokina 11-16mm (under the camera grip), and my 580EXII with case and extra things like extra batteries, filters and more in my 5MDH.
My cousin regularily fit his 40D + lens (17-55 or 10-22 most likely) and 430EX (folded to an L shape) in his 4MDH. It's a tiny bit of a tight fit, but small and compact.

Your cousin's setup sounds perfect for me. Thanks!
