S230 Bright Shots

In some photos, I would like to shoot with the sun in them. How do I take the photo without causing picture glare and darkening out? Is there a special filter to use? Will it harm the camera in any way to take shots with the (mid-day) sun in the photo? Thanks.

I've heard it is bad to shoot the sun without a special filter, but I don't remember the name of the filter to use. If you don't get any help here soon, maybe try calling a camera store.
