When I asked a similar question to a very knowledgeable sales person at the local shop he remarked that Tamron is one of the largest lens makers in the world, providing lenses for all kinds of applications, from scientific to commercial to consumer products. He said variation in quality is no more significant with Tamron lenses, including this particular lense that I later purchased, than with Canon or Nikon lenses. Since sharpness is one of the favorite topics of discussion among those of us obsessed with lenses, it is little wonder we worry about specific lenses from time to time. This lens is a winner. If you look at the signature lines of folks at many camera sites you will see this little beauty nestled within a collection of L lenses. It is my walkaround lens, leaving the 17-40mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/4L in the bag. IF you can find one, don't think twice about adding it to your kit.
