I'd straighten out whatever you put it on. To be completely honest, it seems kinda like a half assed setup...

Nice work. Looks very close to life-like.

I agree that it needs straightening but given that he's no professional and learning, calling it half-arsed is a bit harsh in my eyes.

lower the lighting a little... seems "saturated" or whatnot... maybe increase the sharpness.

It looks a bit overexposed on my laptop, so don't take that as gospel. I'd clean up the dust on the black cloth, & turn the wheel the other way.

The model itself looks amazing! Lots of detail in that one!
As for the photo, well, not as great. Over exposed, loss of saturation and the background is a little wrinkled and out of place with such a detailed model. Personally I wouldn't shoot it with such a small appature. Open it up a bunch and see if you can get the back end to go a little less in focus. And then maybe get a lower angle on the model to try and see it as you would the real car.
The model has so mucg detail in it that with a little camera trickery you might be able to pull off a "Is it real or is it fake?" deal.
Did you build the model? If so, congrats, it rocks!

Have you thought about shooting them outdoors on asphalt?

I guess the setup is a bit like your advice :)

I'll fix the background and change the lighting.

2nd this ^. Try a sidewalk, blacktop, any cement, whatever, with camera at ground level might look more interesting than black cloth. Just keep in mind the background and you can make everything appear to be at scale; if that's what you're going for.
Since you're in Aus weather should be looking better than the 2 feet of snow I just got today.

A little PP motion blur on the wheels and the model is doing donuts!
