Gents still waiting for some deposits to come in, if you still want to come could you transfer it over to me. I am away over Christmas in Dorset and will be without the internet and would like to get it sorted before Christmas. As it stands with everyone who said they want to come means there are 15 which is the maximum for one group. If anyone else is interested I can ask about us going as two smaller groups

Thanks

Ladies and Gents

I have paid the deposit for Sunday. I have spoken to them about having two smaller groups if we get sufficient numbers but due to two other groups booking the same day that is not possible. There is an absolute maximum of 15 and that includes any non toggers. To have two groups we would need ten toggers in each which I think would be a bit of a stretch and would have to move the day to Saturday when they only have one other group booked in. He did say it might be better to go to the Saturday because on the Sunday one of the groups is a car club and they can be quite large ( 40 ) however they are non photographers but did say they would be able to cater for us if we went ahead with the Sunday. If we were looking at moving to the Saturday it would mean some people taking time off work.

We have fifteen people who said they definitely want to come with the possibility of Rich's friend. I have included my wife in the 15 but she will drop out in favour of a photographer.

I need the deposits off everyone ASAP so I know where we stand with numbers.

Secondly unless you want me to change it I will keep it to the Sunday, however if people are thinking of changing it I need to know ASAP as they are beginning to get booked up.

Weekends - either day should be fine. As long as it is on the calendar well in advance to avoid any sort of double booking.

If the Sunday is going to be "crowded" surely we do not want to be feeling confined, afteral we are paying for better access and close proximity to the animals!

Ah! well that is good if they allow enough time per group per enclosure to avoid clashes/queueing/reduced time et al. Having never been there I have no idea of how they would manage it???

I think it would make sense to keep it to the Sunday

Sorry to cause confusion but I just wanted to make you aware of all the facts.

As Rob said when we went there were a couple of other groups and they did not get in our way. If we changed to the Saturday there is no guarantee another large group would not book the same day. You never know the car club might be some vintage or Ferari and we end up taking pictures of their cars.

Rich thanks for the update

Glynnr I will definitely bear you in mind once I can finally get a deposit off everyone, I can't remember if you have found it but we are all from the SE and congregate on this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=777484)

Kaben

Its advisable not to wear any yellow clothing on the day as that makes the cats very aggressive. Apparently blue is very soothing to them though, so you are safe with blue denims and a blue t-shirt.

Rob had a 70-200 last time which I also had a go on for most of the time that was long enough. Depends where the cats are in the cage though. I had my 100-400 which worked well. Shorter lenses are also handy as you can get really close to them. I got to stroke a tiger through the fence which was pretty amazing

If I may offer a tip, having been before. Try and get a lens with a front element less than 75mm. The fencing around is 75mm so is it's smaller you can poke it through.
I got some brill images like that.

Good point but I did think we were getting special access where such fence grid spacing was not going to be the main concern i.e. there are 'openings' to line up/poke the lens through ~ for the record when I went to the Hertfordshire Big Cat Sanctuary just resting the lenshood against the fence and making sure I was centred on a gap threw any fence in the image frame OOF !

Like this frame filler ~ I certainly am looking forward to getting nice & optically close

Hi Adrian
Yes we can do an evening BBQ extra cost is £10 per head, includes range of meats, veggie options and salads and soft drinks, need to know numbers about 5 days before event
Normally we start photo days at 10.30, tea / coffee available from 10am is that that OK?

I don't know what peoples thoughts are re the BBQ. They provide lunch which is included in the price. You can stay quite late and they let you wander round on your own ( or they did last year ) if people can let me know either way.

If the weather is good I definitely think it is worth staying, Rob and I got some cracking shots of the lions who slept the whole day then early evening continually yawned which means you get some nice teeth shots. It also means you get more for your money!! I appreciate some of you have further to travel and this may influence your decision. One thing I did not ask is what is the minimum number for the BBQ but once people have said what they fancy I can ask them. It might pay to leave it nearer the time to tell them if we want to go ahead so we can gauge the weather.

Evening all

Just got back from a 700 mile 4 day business trip to Devon & Cornwall ~ phew!

I think I would be up for the BBQ if as you say Adrian if the weather is especially fine and we get the opportunity to get some low light/sunseting images, sounds good to me. And I gather the BBQ 'period' is very much the quiet time as I surmise what day visitors they had will have gone by then & if free roam (limited access compared to the tog day period???) then that also sounds appealing :D

Edit ~ Adrian that Snow Leopard I was approx 1.5m away ;)

I am afraid there is a maximum number that are allowed to go which we have already reached. If any places do come free I will let you know.

Laurence they said at the beginning of that week. We can always ask everyone now and assuming the weather is going to be ok or as best as we can tell from the met office confirm it with them on the Monday. It is not far away now !!!!!

On that note who would like to stay for the BBQ

Here is a repost from the e-mail they sent me

You can stay quite late and they let you wander round on your own ( or they did last year ) if people can let me know either way.

map of how to get there here (http://www.whf.org.uk/map.cfm)

Wildlife Heritage Foundation (registered office)
Headcorn Road

How to Get Here

The most direct road route to our site for most visitors will be via the M20.

Leave the M20 at junction 8, Maidstone Services, follow brown tourist signs for Leeds Castle, pass the main entrance to the castle and continue on the B2163 until the junction with the A274, approximately 3 miles.

Turn left on to the A274 towards Sutton Valence and Headcorn, pass the fire station and Headcorn railway station on your right. At the end of the main village street, before the railway bridge, turn left sign posted to Egerton and Smarden.

Follow alongside the railway until you pass under a bridge (please note height restriction of 11 foot 6 inches applies). The entrance to our site is approximately 250 metres on right through the Marley Farm Industrial Estate.

Did somebody say BBQ.........+1 For that option please:D

D day is getting closer. If anyone needs a lift I am travelling from Bromley and can pick anyone up from Bromley South. I am going to aim to get there for 10 and will be leaving just after 9.

Remember as well as a long lens to take a wide one as well. I have seen some pictures on TP where someone took a macro lens and that worked very well. Where we parked the cars last time it was fairly central so I would advise if in doubt bring more kit as you can always go back and get it.

Festively plump I like that one

I dont think i have ever seen the word "Is" used in one sentence so many times before!

You will propbably not need to use the monopod Laurence, but bring it anyway. The cars are only about 30 seconds away from the enclosures so going back to get it is no problem.

Pretty much mandatory for me. I'm hoping for good sunshine, and also hoping that the animals won't be sheltering too much.

It might be an idea to steal some stuffed toys from your loved ones to bring along as bait....

from experience - bring both, I was staggered by how close we got and I will probably be using the shorter focal lengths too, I shot some stuff on my 10-20!

the parking is within the actual complex and bringing loads of stuff is not a problem as nipping back to the car is a matter of seconds!

I took the 400 last time, and thought it might have been too much, I got some lovely shots with it, but feel 300 would be better (and will be bringing a 300 this time).

I'll also have 24-105 and 70-200 in the bag.

adrian5127
20th of May 2010 (Thu), 13:01
@ Jon I would definitely bring the 100-400 as the extra reach can come in handy, as Lee said the parking is close to the enclosures so bringing more to be on the safe side is not a problem as you can just nip back to the car.

Bodmin636
20th of May 2010 (Thu), 13:16
